Cape Vulture ( Kransaasvoel) Gyps coprotheres
Size 105 - 115 cm
Fly in large groeps and make their nests in high cliffs in the mountains.

This specimen was found in a birdpark in Polokwane. He was sitting minding his own business on a pole. I snapped a shot of him and he took offence. Came straight for me. In the ensuing seconds my one sandal stayed behind which he promptly attacked. I then had to resort to taking my remaining sandal to fight him off and retrieve my sandal
He then calmly took off to go bask in the sun and mope about not having a sandal for breakfast.

Camera Sony DSR - PDX10P
Focal length 43mm
No Flash
Portrait Mode
Exposure Time 1/425sec
F-Number F/2.8

Hope you enjoy him, I didn't

Please note, No animals or humans were injured in any way in taking this shot.

Very nice portrait, good details.
Well done

Willie, I must say you have an "eye" for the shot! Good detail this close for your video-cam. It's a bit hot up-top as you probably well know. Does your equipment have any type of manual exposure adjustment?

Well done on getting this close. Nice shot and sharp details. The top of the head is a bit overexposed. I like these critters.

Very nice capture. When you wake up and one of these are leaning over you, you know that your nap was too long.

I like this capture and in a strange way I actually like the overexposed bit in the corner.

Thanks for posting

A nice capture and with good detail and composition.
Good eye detail and expression.
Great note!
Well done.

Don't they give him enough food there in the bird park? Anyway he shouldn't be anoyed when people take pictures of him. after all this is what he gets payed for. In spite of all the trouble you managed to get a very good portrait of him. Nice shot.

I like the attitude of your Cape Vulture, Willie.
This allows it to make forget the imperfections.
TFS.

Very good Willie.
It's impressive to see what you can do with your video-cam.
Good colours and details.
It's a little overexposure but still a good shot.
Well done.

Nice shot and good sharpness, you realy get a close feeling.

Very artistic shot, I dont care being a bit overexposed in some places, it looks artistic anyway. Good composition and angry face.

Willie, Great portrait with beautiful details in the shadows.
Greetings, Jan

Ever since I saw the thumbnail for the first time, I wanted to have a closer look. This is one very nice mugshot of the whiteback vulture, Willie. The eye is alive and the bill sharp & shiny.
The Cape Vulture has a light eye, the WB a dark eye. The Cape has two naked, blue skin spots on the "shoulderblades" lacking in the WB. This is my easoning in the ID, mainly the eye.

I guess he added meaning to "Ask before photographing!" didn't know you had to ask birds...nice note and shot of this aggressive bird.
Well done.

Willie, I've been searching for a vulture shot for quite a long time. One of these days, I have gotten some, but I didn't like them.

This one is really great. Despite the difficulties, your effort was worthwhile.

Congratulations.
