Brown-veined White Butterfly (Belenois aurota)

This butterfly has its origins in Africa where a large number of morphologically similar species occur. This subgroup contains members that undertake major mass migrations. In Africa the major member is Belenois aurota which annually undertakes migrations during summer-autumn in a northeast direction. This butterfly has historically made its way to India, and from there probably made its way via Indonesia to Australia where it is now represented by B. java.

The male and female butterflies can occur in either a pale or dark colour form, and both forms can occur together in the one population at the same time. The different colour forms are most obvious in the females, whereby the female pale form is similar to the male, while the female dark form has variable amounts of black or dark brown colouration on the outer half of the wings, and the inner half of the underside of the forewing is bright yellowish orange. The darker forms seem to be a product of a cool breeding period, particularly during winter, which causes a lengthening of the brood period (particularly the pupation period) resulting in increased melanin (black) pigment.

I do not know a lot about butterflies. What I do know is that they bring the rain. One or two days before the rain they hatch and start migrating. I saw them from yesterday and last night it started to rain. It's been raining ever since. You have no idea how happy I am. Whe are about 150mm behind our average rainfall and things were looking pretty dreary. There was a short burst of sunshine this afternoon and I went into the garden. It was bustling with life. I just wish that the rain would continue for a couple of days.

Gerhard, I like your compostion..How opportune for the shot this small flower in matching colors! Great POV angled slightly front with great details seen especially in the body, head, eye and that long, long antenae left. Also, the green BG contrasts very well & compliments the colors of your subjects nicely. Excellent work!

This is absolutely an excellent macro, Gerhard. Perfect!! Jy beweeg nou in die kringe van die meesters.

So beautiful and so fragile, You made very good work, you have luck to have more butterflies, in Region Parisian it rains and it is cold.
Beautiful contrast and management of the color and light
Very great shot Gerhard

Very good picture of this butterfly, that F8 worked perfectly this time getting almost all the subject into DOF. Tones and details are wonderful, and colours too. The eye is captivating.

Yet another superb shots from you Gerhard, only one small nit the near antenae is forward of the focus but thats not unusual in buterfly shots.

Absoluut pragtig. It is easy to see when a person is enjoying himself and you are defenitely doing so - your work is showing it as well.

Very good compositiona and perfect sharpness.

Thanks for posting.
