This is an unbelievable one, Willie! If you didn't mentioned what it was, I would have thought of a bronze sculpture created by an imaginative artist. Sure we don't have these here. Your photo is perfect (colors, DOF, sharpness), and you are showing us a really different beetle. I like your close framing and the ground surface matching very well with the rough body.

as you say a real star wars beastie the texture is particularly well seen in both the sand and the carapace, we have them too in a lot different forms but the one called Vine weevil is the worst the grubs eat most roots on a plant and they are not fussy about the type and they are all female to boot and just walk round laying 1000's of eggs. are yours the same?

Creo que has cometido un error Willie... definitivamente es el ganador de los nominados.
Impresionante captura por lo singular de la especie.
Excelentes detalles con un colorido que parece irreal.
Otra gran presentación tuya y de tu video cámara.

Now this beetle has some serious armour. Fantastic detail and composition. I like how the beetle fills the frame with enough terrain visible to suggest he is on a quest. Well done.

As others have said, it is a great photo that looks almost man made. Maybe one of mcdonald's kids toys. I have noticed that the macro photo's tend to give many of nature's little gems a surreal look. the focus is great, dop is dead on.

I'm without words after browsing through your collection. If found this one on the intro page and decided to put a comment here to begin with.
The insect really could be Darth Vader's companion, you are absolutely right. The same blackness and signs of armor. Sharp, a very good DOF, good colors, a very detailed note and...
You are creating a tribute to nature, my compliments!
