Threebanded plover - Charadrius tricollaris

Photographed in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, at the Cekaneni area, on the Hluhluwe side of the park. I had to attend an honorary officers meeting, in the park, and arrived a little earlier than required to look around for a quick shot or two. This photo was taken just a couple of minutes before a heavy shower of rain arrested all hopes of any other photos for the day.

Taxonomic Classification

Chordata (animals with a spinal column),
SUBPHYLUM: Vertebrates (birds, fish and humans),
CLASS: Aves (birds),
ORDER: Charadriiformes (shore birds),
FAMILY: Charadriidae (plovers).

Plover, a common name for some members of the large family of shore birds, small to medium in size, found in ice-free lands all over the world. Plovers are plumpish wading birds with pigeon like bills and strong markings of black or brown above with white below. There are about 40 species in the subfamily, most of them called "plover" or "dotterel".

They are a small distinctively marked plover, having 2 black breast bands, either side of a white band, which is the diagnostic feature for this bird. A red orbital eye ring easily distinguishes it from the similar Ringed and Little Ringed Plover. Sexes look alike.

Africa: A bird of the central, eastern and southern regions of the continent. Widespread South of the Congo basin right down to Southern Africa. In the North it occurs from central Nigeria East through East Africa to South Sudan, Ethiopia and northwest Somalia. They are considered common within their range and are found all year round, normally in pairs when breeding, but have been recorded in flocks of up to forty birds.

Occurs along the muddy edges of small pools, lakes and streams, or rarely on open ocean beaches.

Not globally threatened.

They feed mainly on insects, worms, crabs or other invertebrates, depending on habitat, which are obtained by a run-and-pause technique, rather than the steady probing of some other wader groups. They hunt by sight, rather than by feel as longer-billed waders like snipe do.

A penetrating, high pitched "wheee-wheet" whistling sound.

They will breed between April and January. Incubation is done by both parents for up to 30 days. They nest on open ground and dig shallow hollows lined with pebbles or plant debris where their clutch of eggs (usually 4) is deposited. Both male and female share the duties of rearing the young.

Hi Loot,
this is a beauty and I love to low POV.
It's a wee bir soft, maybe camera-shakings, but it's still a very beautiful shot. Lovely colours and well composed.
The shallow DOF helps the bird to stand out nicely from the BG.
Very well done, my friend.

Wow, Loot. It is a beauty indeed.
I have never seen a plover with red eyes like those. An exceptional feature. The red rim around the eye and the red beak really stand in great contrast to the rest of the bird. You have done an outstanding job to capture the many shades of brown in the feathers, and I love the soft gray in his face. The details are superb. A really pretty bird that I have not seen before, so thank you for introducing me to a new species. : )

Hi Loot, this fellow looks like he's been crying all night over the Super 14 results!!

Nah, he/she's a beauty, stunning colours and details. A little soft, but keep at it... So many contrasts, red, white, black, brown, and you show them well. And I can see you in the eye.

Well done Loot,

Hello Loot, what a lovely plover. Very nice bird. I like your shot, the colours are great and it's a good composition, my only nits are that the whites are a little burned and I think the focus is a little soft. However, it does have impact. Well done.

Hi Loot,
Amazing eyes on that Plover. Nice light has rendered some beautiful colors. Detail looks good. Nice shot!

Hi Loot,
This is a very beautiful bird and very well captured,
the details are excellent, very good lighting and perfect exposure.
Well done and thanks for sharing!

Hi Loot

What a honey! Such a cute wee face with lovely colours. The red around the eye is a nice contrast to the colours of the plumage. I love the low POV. It is a wee bit soft on focus, but a pleasure to view all the same. :-)

Hello Loot, Excellent color and light, just a tiny bit over on the white of the breast. It's very well composed, Great POV/pose and isolated well from the BG. Good detail. Luv those red-rimmed eyes, very striking.
Well done!

geez, loot, what happened to the poor bird?!
such a red eye...fascinating shot! :-)
and all 3 bands of the 3banded plover are visible, too.
well seen & captured, thor.

Hi Loot, What a excellent capture. colors and details, BG just really a great phot, TFS Kyle

Loot, the image is very nice.

I like pov and composition. Great bg too and colors.

I did a workshop. I hope you like it.

Great shot, sharp with good composition....just wondering what did you use to stabilise the lens?

These plovers never seem to stand still long enough to get a good shot but you've managed!!

Thanks v much...

Hi Loot,
Very good close up, the colours, light and BG are very well, only I see that is a bit blurred, but the details despite this are good.

Oh Loot, I love this shot so much, the colors on the bird are so bright and clear. I like the intense close-up very much. Excellent work. For your only photo opportunity of the day it was a great one!

Bonjour Loot
Belle prise de vue C'est un très bel oiseau que je vois pour la première fois. Les contrsates et les détails sont clairs. Belle présentation .
Bravo et au revoir ....JP

Dis 'n pragtige foto Loot.

Hallo Loot
The clarity of the details captured on this Plover is just great. Really a pleasant image to look at but I escpecially like the red circle around the eye. The colours of the fine plumage is really great, and I like the stripes on the neckline. Your presentation is worth a huge smiley. Thanks for sharing.
