Social Wasp ( Druiwelbye ) Family Vespidae

Size 7 – 35mm

Habitat – Beneath roofs, under hanging rocks and in bushes.

Social wasps are capable of giving you a painful sting if disturbed, especially whilst building their nests. Fortunately, its effect is short lived.

Using tree bark and other finely chewed vegetable material, social wasps build their paper-like nests in a sheltered position, suspended from a fibrous stalk.
The female builds the nest, sometimes helped by others. When this housing development of hexagonal cells in concentric circles is large enough, the females lay their eggs, one to a cell.
Normally the cells have the openings at the bottom. Into the aperture the female thrusts pellets of chewed up caterpillar to feed her larva.
One the larva is fully grown, the adult female closes the hole with the same papery material used to build the nest, and the imprisoned larva pupates.

I found this specimen at Molepo Dam, whilst taking shots of the Natal Flat lizard.
I was most surprised at how little attention the wasp payed to me and my camera and hence I was able to get real close to get his shot despite his continual moving around to get everything out of the flowers he was busy with. Hope you enjoy.

Willie, Great display from this POV of the narrow waist & see-through wings! Excellent note, well done!

Very good shot, Willie, specially with this strong backlight. Every details is in focus, which is sometimes difficult to achieve with a macro, and specially at f/4. You've got the elegance of this insect very well expressed.

Your macro is flawless, Willie. I can't believe the clarity you get with the cam you've got. Brilliant shot. This is a Vespidae (paper wasp) family member, If I am not mistaken it's Belonogaster dubia.

Nice shot, is strange, although some of the BG is washed out, you got all the wasp with leafes behind and dont disturbs a lot. Very nice subject and great note too. I like the flower.

Very good capture Willie and I really like the angle. The handling of the backlight is very good as well as the dof. Very informative note - thanks.

Glad you managed to get this without a sting...looks as though he is on alert though with wings up like that.
I would possibly adjust light levels and increase the colour saturation a little here to compensate for some of the 'bleaching' effect of the suns glare.
Look forward to seeing lizard shots too.

Willie, POV here is really great. Besides, I like the composition and the vivid colors. Finally, perfect DOF.

Tones, colors are really impressive. I like the design of the photo, it is really strong to emphasize the mood of it.
