[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Bateleur eagle is the most famous of the snake eagles. Bateleur is French for "tightrope-walker". This name was probably chosen because of its distinctive aerial acrobatics. Its pitch black feathers with white under the wings, bright red face and legs and black beak are characteristic markings. Unlike most creatures, female Bateleur eagles are larger than males.




Bateleur eagles spend 8-9 hours each day in the air looking for food. Their diet includes antelope, mice, birds, snakes, and carrion .




The Bateleur eagle is found throughout Africa south of the Sahara. It prefers tree and brush savanna .




Bateleur eagles pair for life and stay in the same nest for several years. Unpaired adults can sometimes be seen near a nest site. This bird is not rejected by the mating pair and does not help with nesting.



A female will lay single egg in a nest that sits in a large tree that offers protection. Mother incubates the egg while father collects food and sticks for the nest. Sometimes, however, the father incubates. After an incubation period of 52-59 days, the baby Bateleur eagle hatches. 110 days later, the hatchling will leave the nest, but will continue to receive food from its parents for another 100 days. Only 2% of chicks make it to adulthood.

i liked the colours of this eagle.Good POV and great compo with well-seen details.if this was a closer shot more details could be seen.the image can be cropped a bit more to highlight the subject.

I think that you should be gentle with sharpening, I can see the haloes around the subjects in the frame.

Outstanding composition on this Bateleur Eagle. I have only observed them in captivity here. They are very impressive birds of prey. The light here was excellent. Great exposure with the superb colors and sharp detail.

Hi Andrea
You have an impressive portfolio giving evidence of your many travels.
This is a good composition using the very impressive tree to fill the frame. The colours are great and the DOF is fine. The BG with the blue-blue sky is excellent and the exposure was well managed.

PS. I am still waiting for the day to find this guy here in the Hluhluwe Park at close quarters and photograph it. So far I've only seen it fly in the distance, but the day will come. In the mean time I will appreciate yours.

Privet Andrea.
The empty space around speaks about a free bird. It is possible to depart, but I still shall stand on this snag. Good work.

Good shot - a little too much sky maybe in the crop and a touch soft, but still a great post and well detailed note.

Never having seen this type of bird, it is nice you also include the information.
I like your contrast and rich sky colour.
Your compression is quite low however and that is what makes the jpg artifact around the head.
I think this photo is a good composition and could look super if a bit higher resolution and some of the little black dots cloned out.
