Orange River White-eye
Zosterops pallidus

Afrikaans: Gariep Glasogie, English: Pale White-eye, German: Oranjebrillenvogel, French: Zostérops du fleuve pallidus:

In latin, “zostero” means the eye or face and “pallidus” means pale or pallid.

They are very small, white eye-ringed birds with crown and upper-parts green with faint brown wash. The throat and under-tail yellow-green and rest of under-parts (chest to belly) whitish with peach-buff wash. The Cape White-eye (I posted one here), with which sometimes considered similar, and with an area of overlap in the interior of S Africa, is either grey (with muddy wash) or green to yellowish-green below.

They are resident of fairly arid country in central and west of RSA (centred on Orange River catchment) and in Namibia. Riverine bush, alien growth, gardens.

They are endemic to Southern Africa and Namibia but highly localized to patches of suitable cover.

Thanks for the info on this new species Gerhard. I didn't know of this new species either.

Hi Jannie

A lovely close shot of this pretty wee White-eye. You have composed this nicely. The colours are very subtle.

Here in New Zealand we have the Zosterops lateralis Silvereye or Waxeye. I have them in my garden at the moment, and I feed them apple and brown sugar and water. They are lovely wee birds and make their happy sounds constantly.

Good shot. Thanks.

Hi Jannie,
Excellent shot, the thing that strikes me immediately is that although you have excellent detail you also have the textures in the feathers, which I think is quite hard to capture (too soft vs. too sharp). Beautiful natural colours and perfect DOF, nicely framed. Interesting too to read about this exotically named bird, I've never heard of it before. Great post.

Hello Jannie,
Wonderful photo of this Glasogie. I never saw this photo, far before my time on TN. As a Dutchman I can understand the title very well.
Superb sharp details and great clear colours. Very good POV, DOF, OOF BG and composition.
