Lion-tailed macaqueMacaca silenus

This old world monkey also known as a wanderoo was photographed earlier this year at the Baboons and Monkeys House in the Pretoria Zoo, while it sat and chewed its toe nails. This is only the second photo of a Lion-tailed macaque on the TrekNature site.

It was another one of those difficult through-the-glass shots and this was no ordinary glass, but 19mm thick chemically strengthened "Resistoglass". I had to deal with harsh backlight conditions that reflected weird and wonderful ghost images of the people surrounding me on to the glass. Out of the 10 photos I've taken of this monkey, only two did not have the reflection of either brick walls or little girl's dresses with cute little flowers on them.

Description

As well as having a tail like a lion's, this species also have a long, brown-grey mane around the face. They have a black body and black tail, with a slight tuft of hair on the tip. They have a lifespan of 38 years. Body length: 40-61cm, Tail length: 24-38cm, Weight: Male 5-10kg, Female 3-6kg.

Distribution
By 1971 it was known to occur only in the southern third of India, generally in the Western Ghats. In 1984 it was thought to occur in scattered locations in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Status
Lion-tailed macaques are classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List. They are considered to be the most endangered monkey, with only 400 individuals left in the wild. The major reason for its decline appears to have been habitat loss due to the spread of agriculture and teak, coffee, tea and other plantations. Formerly it was extensively captured for the pet trade, zoos and research, as well as for use in Oriental medicine.

Habitat
They inhabit evergreen, broadleaf forest in hilly country, up to 1500m where they are diurnal (mostly active during the day) and primarily arboreal although it does occasionally descend to the ground. The lion-tailed macaque seems to be unable to adapt to human settlement; for example, it apparently doesn't travel through plantations or use them as habitat.

Behaviour
Lion-tailed macaques live in variable groups, sometimes with just one male and many females, or there may be two males and many females. Other times groups may range from 4-34 individuals. They usually contain about 10-20 individuals, including 1-3 adult males This species has overlapping territories and troops may temporarily split into sub groups. Lion-tailed macaques are active during the day. They spend the majority of their time in the trees, and are cautious when on the ground.

Food
They are omnivorous and feed on leaves, roots, sprouts, nuts, fruit and invertebrates.

Reproduction
After a gestation period of 162-186 days, females give birth to 1 young, which weighs about 450g at birth. Source.

Post Processing was done with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0.

Well it's about time, Loot. : P
You sure make people wait a long time for a new post,
but it sure is worth the wait. : )
This macaque is fabulous. The pose is fantastic, with super sharp details and perfect exposure. Nice tight framing. Great DOF. Wonderful colors. I just LOVE those intense orange eyes.
Another winner. : )
TFS, my friend. : )

Hi Loot
Except for the fact that you captured a brilliant image here, I sympathize with the difficulty of capturing images through glass. Is he perhaps doing his nails? Regards.

Hello Loot,
Ce portrait est superbe et brillant... Il est vrai que c'est pas facile de faire une photo au travers d'une vitre. Belle netteté et PdC.
Well seen and well done, TFS my friend.

I was going to say thank you for your self-portrait, and then I thought that might upset you Loot!! So I won't! Also your eyes aren't so orange. . .
I love your friend, especially with the him giving himself a toenail manicure. And those intense orange eyes - what winners they are. Great capture Loot, and through teh glass it looks perfect. Well shown.

What a great shot! You really caught him a bit by surprise, Loot...at least so it seems. Good idea on posting such a picture, if you say that this is the second post of a Lion-tailed macaque on TN...gives us a chance to see more and learn more :)
Lovely colors, superb POV and details.
Bravo and TFS

Hi Loot ! This is an awesome shot ! The monkey is so beautiful, and he has such eyes ! They are really a bright orange. Details and textures od the fur are wonderful, beautiful colors, and excellent DOF and BG. Funny pose of the monkey, also, trying to eat his nails. The photo is excellent, really excellent, even if shot through a window. Very well done !

Hi Loot

Ha,ha.... love the title. Magnificent shot of a stunning looking Monkey. You have done a great job here through the glass. The result is a high quality image. Love the orange eyes. Do they glow in the dark? :-)

Hi Loot,

Nicely captured and well composed and exposed. Excellent work.

Mike

Hi Loot,
WOW! I love those eyes! The fill flash exposure looks excellent here. Very nice saturated colors and tack sharp detail. A very good pose with superb facial expression. I love the frame filling composition and tight crop. This keeps all your focus on that face. Nice work!
Scott

Hello Loot, Very nice shot, excllent details, everything isvery crisp, great colors with thes big orange eyes, perfect lighting and exposure, great pov TFS Kyle

Hi Loot,
Very striking image, a winner.
The eyes grab ya immediately of course, very good impact..Excellent color, detail, DOF, framing, and use of your flash...
A unique & interesting pose, and well set against the green BG.
All in all, an exceptional image you have here. Reminds me of my chihuahuas..they are always chewing on their hind toenails :)
Very well done.

Great post, Loot!!! You can have entitled it also "the old man" for he is looking at us with so much wisdom with his so nice orange eyes! Looking at him it remember me an old story where you can find, after a long climb, the "Old Man of the Mountain". The nice green and blurry bg compliments so well the monkey. Details are awesome too and you got a great pov! Exposure is also magnifically managed! Great post and TFS,

Michel

Hello Loot
This is a stunning shot and well worth all the effort it took to capture this fascinating character. (thanks for your notes too)
Terrific composition with a nice tight crop. the colour of the eyes is quite captivating and the lack of "green eyes" from the flash is remarkable.
Kudos from a relative newbie, Silke

Stunning shot Loot.
There's nothing to critique really, and considering you took this through glass, well I might have to just throw my compact away (just kidding). Great use of flash, well done.

I love the pose, composition and the all around picture. Its an awsome capture. The only thing that I can critique, is the direct flash. Looks like the flash wansn't diffused and kinda give it a not so fluid look. A bit of hot light.

Hello Loot!
Wow! What a couple of eyes indeed! These eyes looks like traffic lights! Such a lively and great coloured! pov, framing, colours all are wonderful. Flash! through 19 mm glass!!! Very interesting and great use of flash also. btw, this wanderoo has got some bad habits, he is not a gentle one, but so cute one for sure:-)
Thank you Loot!

oh, bad hair day? *g*
excellent capture, loot! :-)
and again it´s "i don´t believe there´s glass" -
amazing, through the glass and with a flash.
how far apart where you and how far was he from the glass?
i just hate glass, most of the time it´s dirty or you get reflections - the flower dresses would have been nice, too. *g*
superb pose ("yummy, toe nails for lunch") and direct eye-contact - i guess these orange eyes glow in the dark.
wonderful job & take care, thorsten.

Hi Loot,
this is a great portait of a beautiful monkey.
You did a great job ubder the circumstance.
Nor easy to shot through a glass and you avoid the reflections. Good details, nice colours and compostion.
I like the pose and the POV. Maybe you could have reduce the flash with about 0.5 step.
Great work, my friend.

Hi loot,

Another great shot! I was wondering how this monkey didn't reach up and steal your camera then I read how the photo was taken. Even greater job managing not to capture everyone behind you and the annoying reflective flash. The eyes make the photo stand out perfectly and the detail of the animal such as his foot are fantastic! Great job!!
cheers!

Hi Loot,
What a nasty monkey, eating its own toes nails!
funny capture. You have managed very well the use of flash. Details are very good.
Interesting and not usual for me to see orange eyes.

Hi Loot,
Excellent detail in this shot and such an amazing pair of eyes. Excellent result for a shot taken through glass, your perseverance certainly paid off and I think that mastering aquarium shots has gone a long way here.

I have to say though that I think a couple of things would improve this shot. Firstly (and this is a subjective point and therefore just my opinion :-)) I think the flash is much too strong. If you've read my notes then you'll know I'm not a great fan of flash photography :-) I would have stopped down on the flash at least 1-1/3 stops, perhaps even 2. The other thing which is really minor is the POV, which seems a little high, so you are looking down on him. Again an opinion, 50 people at the time of writing probably wouldn't agree with me.

Hope I don't seem negative or picky as it's not meant that way, just what I would have done if this shot were for my humble gallery.
Best regards,
Adrian

Hi Loot

A really lovely photo of a beautiful creature.
Those eyes are fantastic.
The little guy looks like he has just come straight out of the hairdressesrs and is now giving himself a D.I.Y. manicure.
Well I suppose it is one way of keeping his gnashers nice and white.
A great photo, even though it was taken through a thick sheet of glass.
Thanks

Regards

Roy

Very nice close up portrait of this macaque the eyes say it all. Every now an then I get the urge to bite on my toenails but I could never reach them, and I thank God that I cant. I hope that your knee replacement goes well for you so that it enables you to go out and get some more fantastic shots. I just recently got back from Peru and I think I got nailed by every mosquito in the jungle. :)

Hi Loot,
Great picture!! I like those eyes . It looks like he's trying to intimidate you :-). The colors is so natural ( Same as your other pictures). The tight framing/cropping really worked well here, though i would have liked to see a bit of breating space ( just a liking , though i dont follow it most of the times :-) )

Hallo Loot
I actually cannot say much about this image because words fail me. This is an encredible clear and detailed image, displayed in a most pleasing manner. This Lion-tailed macaque was the perfect model if I look at this image, and it seems as if it pulled out all the stops for you as well. This is an excellent close-up with brilliant clarity and focus. Those intense orange eyes are one word marvellous and very captivating. Details and textures of the silver lines in the fur are just wonderful and such a beautiful display of colour. This is indeed a winning photograph and you deserve each point received so far and each that will be awarded in the future. Thanks for this beautiful contribution.
