This is the last posting in the mini series on the Kalahari. It depicts one of the Kalahari lions on an early morning stroll next to the road. We were on our way out of the camp on our 1000km+ tip back home. Why do we always get the best photo opportunities when we do not have the time to use it? I sincerely hope you enjoyed the info on the Kalahari & its denizens & that your travel taste buts were primed. This is a magic country that we live in, come & experience it for yourself, its beauty will nestle into your heart, its heat will scourge away your fear, its red sand siphon thru your socks & into your blood, forever calling your name to return! South Africa’s lions are genetically all the same, & yet not the same. The Kalahari lion has bigger feet and stands a bit higher than his bushveld cousins – adaptation for walking on the soft desert sand. The manes seems blonder or blacker than in Kruger National Park, & these lions do climb into trees inquisitive & will investigate a fire at night. The survival rate of the cubs is dismal – more than 2/3 of the cubs die in the 1st year vs ½ to 2/3 elsewhere. If the lioness cannot get enough food, she does not produce, enough milk - a hard life where Darwin’s theory really becomes fact. Lions are gregarious and normally hold in prides with a reigning male. They are lazy & will sleep 20 hours a day on a full belly. They are the only social cats in the feline family.! They have to travel as a necessity, because of the open terrain & the kill rate per lion per year is 47 vs 15 in the KNP. The estimated number of Kalahari lions are ± 150 vs 2 000+ in KNP.This picture was taken early in the morning, the sun just out, but obscured behind the mist /clouds that you can see in the picture - These clouds burn away within half an hour to an hour after sunrise.

I always thought that lions paws are massive and then I sa the size of the paws on a Kalahari Lion and said "Bliksem" Stunning capture of this beast and I love the sunset glow on his fur. - Very well taken!

Very nice usage of light. Combined with the colours of the clouds gives very pleasing look to it. 'Nother great one. Thanx Callie.

Le ciel est génial, la lumière rougeatre du soleil sur ce lion en mouvement. Superbe, j'aurais aimé faire cette photo.

This is somewhat of a stunning photograph, the slight tilt to it gives some indication of movement to both subject and viewer and doesn't detract from the overall mood of the picture which is also conveyed in the note. Superb.

[Just a quick question on the tilt. It seems a lot of photographers are twisting their cameras clockwise when taking pictures, is this a question of how the camera is held, or just a consequence of twist when pushing the shutter button?]

A beauty! That is one handsome lion and you've done him justice, great shot in composition and colour. The sky is great too. Well done.

You captured a magical early morning light, Callie, and of course the mighty lion is the star and seen in all his glory. The clouds in the sky give a wonderful painterly-looking background. As always I found myself absorbing every word of your note, and based on all I've seen and learned about SA from you, Henry, Judy and others I definitely hope to make it there one day.

Very good capture, in amiddle of a hunting, with great framing and light, the colours of the clouds are great, and I assume that I can blame the sunrise with those colours :-)

Wow! What a picture! The colours and the light are fantastic and a marvellous composition - well captured.

Beautiful capture with douce colours and excellent light. Is he indeed walking downhill, or would a minor rotation be in order?
Also, I notice you got your D70 a bit earlier than I thought. Possibly the very first one on the market, then ;-))

Eigenlijk heb ik maar 1 ding Callie Fantastisch,

Perfecta... si hay una forma de retratar semejante felino, es ésta.
Gran composicion... colores presentacion y perspectiva excelentes.
10 puntos!

Perfect... if there is a form to portray feline similar, she is this one.
Great composition... excellent colors, presentation and perspective.
10 points!

The King, oooh, that's someone else:-))
What a great light you have here in this scene, Callie ! Sharpness is very nice too on the "leeuw" walking in a beautiful surroundings. It's an active one, mostly they are very lazy...

excellent colors and composition love the golden shine on the Lion and the threatening sky .. Good job !

Wonderful shot Callie. I love the warm colours and also you left some space for him to walk into. I always thought that the females did the hunting and the males were eating ;-). Never mind it is a great picture and very pleasent to look at.

Your pictures keep getting better Callie! I love the light and composition of this picture. It has the feeling of something from a wildlife magazine. I think a few degrees of clockwise rotation help this one out a lot as we'd see the lion's head higher than the rest of his body and the horizon would be level.

Fantastic lighting for this, really shows off the animal and it's surroundings well.

What a beautifull picture, there's a clear difference between the colours of the lion, the land and the sky. It's powerfull and peacefull at the same time. Great !

this lion seems totally unaware of your presence or he couldnot care less;-)) great capture!

such a majesty!

This shot deserve his title. The lion looks like he's on the run for hunting.
Pretty good picture. Your note is very interesting. For a scanned picture it's really good. What to say more. Congratukations. *

Great post Callie, makes you feel that you are part of the photo

Just exellent !!!

Beautiful picture. I like the contrast of the warm lighting on the lion and the foreground and the cool blues of the sky.
