Ground Squirrel
Xerus inauris

The ground squirrel is a highly social, tropical ground squirrel that does not hibernate, suggesting that female receptivity could be scattered throughout the year. Males in this species are very social, living in all-male bands. A study was done on the mating tactics of male ground squirrels to examine the effects of year-round female receptivity and male grouping on these tactics and on the degree of intrasexual competition. Female breeding was highly irregular and unpredictable, and the average operational sex ratio during oestrus was 10:1 (males to females). However, the predicted high rates of aggression were not observed. Instead, competition among males was manifested by competitive searching, repeated copulations and disruptions of copulations. Dominant males had more copulations with more females, first access to females and were more likely to copulate below-ground where disruptions were unlikely to occur. The mating patterns of males in this species are a product of the asynchrony of female oestrus, year-round breeding and the survival benefits of grouping.

These were so friendly that I could get very close. Lovely critters to watch when they play. I hope you like them as much as I do.

Nice picture but I think I would crop the left part and make it vertical. The DOF is excellent.

Bingo, Very nice capture here of these rodents, Gerhard. I see they also suffer from our red dust, but it makes the contrast even better against the green grass, I love these guys, well captured, nice note too.

I think I'll go with the suggestion to crop to square here. Apart from that it's a great capture with a high cuteness factor, good sharpness and details and it's great to see them actually using their little hands ;-))

Funny picture even if they look like they're doing something very serious ;-).
Superb picture with a great point of view, sharpness and DOF.

Awesome picture with great sharpness. I can see every single hair in his fur. The color is great and the grass makes a nice contrast to the red fur. And I love squirels so thanks for such a great photo of them. They are always so cute. I love watching them use their hands to eat.

Wonderful capture. Excellent Dof, sharpness and the colour combination is superb. Many thanks.

Great scene :-) Two cute greedy-guts in the sun :-) Very cute animals, composition and DOF also excellent. Congrats for this one Gerhard!

I think I had never seen this one. Nice shot, beautiful use of the DOF with the one at the BG. I would have cropped tighter at the left, but again a personal taste. Thanks for sharing Gerhard.

Super! I woluld like to have it at home :-) It would be great repose and recreation to look at them day by day!

This is a really good shot Gerhard.
Such a cute pose and so much detail in the shot. I especially like the OOF one in the background, adds depth to the image. This shot make you feel like you can reach out and touch them through the screen, I love it 10/10.

Wonderful shot Gerhardt. Grounf squirrels in my hometown. Never even knew they were found there. Shows you how informative TN is. The DOF and POV is superb. Excellent post

Very cute shot, Gerhard. I love the way the first one stands up and uses his little hands. His fellow echoing with the same pose is great in your framing. Very good capture. A favorite.
