Raphicerus campestris

I do not think it has a English common name. Literally translated it’s name means “Stonebuck”.

This little critter is on average 75-90cm in length, and stands 50cm tall at the shoulder. It’ weighs a mere 11kg and the horns are on average 9cm. (record 19cm). It’s one of the lesser antelope species and because of its size can easily disappear in tallish grass. They are small, elegant and large eyed, with upperparts normally rufous-fawn. Underparts are normally white. Only the ram carries the short, sharp horns.

There are two widely separated populations in the word. One in Southern Africa (Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe) and the other in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania). They are still abundant although reduced in areas of high human density. They can be found in areas of open country with some cover and dry-riverbed association in arid areas (which is where I found this little one). They occur in singly or ram/ewe pairs both strongly defensive of their own overlapping territories (territories are small 0.3 – 0.5 km2).

They are very hygienic, digging small holes with their hoofs in which they urinate and defecate. Afterwards they cover it with soil. It’s the only antelope species I know off which has this “cleanliness is next to godliness” approach.

Steenbok stay in cover during day time and normally feed in low light conditions, taking grasses, seed pods, fruit, roots and bulb which they dig out with their hoofs.

A single lamb of 900g (that’s very small) is born after a gestation period of 170 days and normally in the rainy season. The little lamb stays completely hidden for a couple of weeks.

As you say, very elegant and neat, even as a photo. Detail, colour, exposure, pose etc ... everything is good here. Well done.

Gerhard, dis a "stunning" foto. In English it is definately also called a Steenbok. Your colour and sharpness is impressive as well as the focus depth, which all contributes to turning what could so easily have been just another "snapshot" into a photographic masterpiece. Good one.

Fantastic shot, I like your photo very much. And also I like this animal. When I was in Malawi (deep bush) I feeded very young antelopes abandonned by their mothers, it was a very interesting exercice.
Well done.

Stunning shot Gerhard.
Great sharpness with very good details, great pose and compo, and very nice colours. Good nnote too.
Excellent work my friend.

Gerhardt, thanks for sharing this precious little big-eared, liquid-eyed guy, he's just soo cute ;-))
Great sharpness, DOF, colours and POV, no nits.

Simply a superb image Gerhard, the detail and lighting are spot on here, and the note is very good, I presume they have discovered covering there Dung renders them less liable to be come a mouthfull for a lion etc.

Outstanding pose, alert but ,,smiling,, probably a ,,stoned buck,, ...

Excellent composition with green blurred BG. Steenbok with superb quality. One of best antelope shots I've ever saw!

Now this IS a VERY nice POV of this gorgeous little buck!
I like the ears and the way he is pulling his mouth - skewebek - at you.
But as a nit, no space for the front feet, as we have dicussed in previous posts.

Excellent wildlife shot Gerhard. Everything is spot on here the pose, compo and its tack sharp. Great post.

Excellent capture Gerhard. Subject is super sharp with lots of details on a perfect oof background. I am surprised by the size of this animal. Looking at the picture one can imagine the size of a deer.
Great post and note.

Gerhard, Very high "cute" factor here. Excellent sharpness & details seen. Superb blurred BG effect. Fantastic shot.. A favorite!! Post Script: Wife says "Ahhh, isn't that purdy!" !!!

What a beauty, Gerhard! Everything is wonderful here. The elegance of this Steenbok is stunning. You've catched that perfectly, with eyes and ears in evidence. Beautiful coat. A dream shot! Thanks and congratulations!

It was going so fast that I forgat to get my camera. But really I enjoy that moment that the deers come out the farmers country and crossing the road, great moment, just like this shot.

WOW! This is great. I missed some great shots while I was away. I will try and catch up...

This is superb, the eyes and face are amazing. One day I am going to have to see these things for myself.

What a excellent photo, so sharp.
Beautifull photo.

Well done!

This is a great shot.
Pose is excellent, magnificient DOF, beautiful softlighting and color balance very natural. No negative critic on this one. Question: 400mm ? Is it real optical value or 35mm equivalent value? I guess it the real value, wich mean an equivalent value of 600mm. TFS

amazing creature and capture, TFS Ori

Hi Gerhard. Absolute beauty. Love the details in the fur. Perfect image! TFS Trevor
