Well, at least I think it is. The interesting thing is that it is in a fairly dry area of South Africa. We've had a lot of rain lately, and this was growing in a fairly shaded area. I really need to get more books on animals, birds and plants, gonna be taking a lot of pics now, and generally i don't have a lot of time to hunt down information on te Internet, so sorry I can't provide more info. Please feel free however to cast a little more light on the subject. In a manner of speaking that is, I think the exposure was OK!!
Interestingly enough, I had the WB set to flash, and this one came out better than the pic I took with WB set to sun. I used ISO 1600, so the picture is a little grainy, but not too bad. |

Its a fungus all right some sort of bracket or woody pore fungus sorry cat help with a name. although the glossy top is interesting. I love the colours with all the browns and reds.
It's a very good photo.
The specie more similar growing in Italy is Ganoderma resinaceum Boudier 1890 (that I know very well) but it's very difficult to be sure about your photo because all over the world there are a lot of species included in the genus Ganoderma or similar. Moreover, to identify these species we often need to microscopical analysis.
