Size
Females 12cm
Males 34cm includes tail

The male is easily identifiable with his summer breeding plumage, red bill and fairly stiff tail.
The male is polygamous, with up to six mates, and displays by hovering over feeding females in bouncing flight while twittering continually. Its host is the common waxbill.

The male pictured here resides at my brothers house in Hanaertsburg. He has a bird feeder under a tree in his garden and this guy has taken up residence here. This guy is to say the least, very entertaining with his antics. No other birds are allowed anywhere near the feeder. He divebombs them into oblivion. When a female approaches, he chases her away and she invariably perches on a nearby telephone line. He then starts with his hovering and twittering. If she consents and he is allowed to have his way with her, she is then allowed to feed whilst he guards over her. This shot was taken from about 6ft and he showed no fear whatesoever at my presence. I have a number of shots with his full tail which I will post in future but I wanted to show the face details as all the shots tend to hide the eye because of his colouring.

Hope you enjoy this guy, I have many shots to post of him and his antics including some real porno shots..

I look forward to see more of this interesting Whydah. Very good capture. I am curious about your so called "porno shots". Thanks for sharing Willie.

Lekker naby. I like your point of view. A little sharper, perhaps?

Hi Wilie, nice picture I like the POV and the pose. My only niggles are that the bird is a little soft in focus and it's a shame that the tail is cut off. Well done.

I was watching one just this morning in my hometown. He even tried to divebomb me when I got to close. I think it must have a nest somewhere close.

You had to go invisible for this shot at 43mm. Way to go Willie. Nice close up.

Hi Willie, this is a beaut shot. Good colours and I love his red beak. Well done.

Good composition, but framed a bit too tight.
Focus a wee-bit soft on the face.
Well done.
TFS.

You are right - he really looks a litle upset. Lovely pose, nice capture with great sharpness and very nice colours - well done Willie.

Willie, this is almost a macro. Nice shot with great DOF. At first, I thought the POV was not good enough, but I was mistaken. Besides, the bird did strike a great pose. Its beak has vivid shades and adds a nice contrast.

Sounds like an interesting bird, look forward to future posts. I don't like this POV, but I understand why you posted it, focus is soft on the bill.
