Little Bee-eater
Merops pusillus

It is a small, mostly green Bee-eater. As with other Bee-eaters the bill is long, slender and down curved. The bill is black and the feet and legs are dark pinkish. The upperparts are bright green. The underparts and outer flight feathers are a rich orange. The Little Bee-eater has a black collar separating the yellow throat from the orange breast. The centre feathers of the tail are green, and the outer feathers are orange. It has a broad, dark line extending back from the eye, and a turquoise patch just above the eye. Little Bee-eaters are a common species of bushveld, and open woodland, prefers areas with some open ground and reasonably low perches.

Habitat: Woodlands, savannah, rivers.

Distribution: Found in the most eastern parts of South Africa.

Diet: Flying insects especially bees, wasps and hornets.

Socialisation: It is usually seen singly or in small parties, in clearings in the bush. It hawks low down in small forays and quite often returns to the same perch, often with their insect prey which they kill by hitting it on a branch. May roost in larger numbers at night, up to 15 birds sleeping huddled in a row. Migration is limited to seasonal movements depending on rainfall patterns. These birds roost communally, lined up on a tree branch.

Reproduction: Little Bee-eaters nest from September to November. The nests are a small burrow usually 50 to 130cm long, excavated in a low bank or Antbear hole. Unlike most bee-eaters, these are solitary nesters. They lay 4 to 6 spherical white eggs. Both the male and the female take care of the eggs.

Gerhard - this shot is a beaut, it is well focussed, good depth of field and a perfect OOF background. I like it very much. There is little I can say to offer improvement except that I would like to see a crop with the bird slightly off centre and looking into the picture which might look good rather than having the eye dead centre. That said it's brilliant as it is.

Thanks for sharing Phil.

Hello Gerhart,
Great shot of this colourfull bee eater, the colours are wonderfull, I have seen them a lot, but they are so difficult to take in a shot. So congratulations with this.

Hi Gerhardt,

It's really nice to see you posting again on a somewhat regular basis. :) Your new lens is sensational ... :-o This is again a razorsharp image, with excellent colors and perfect composition. They don't get much better than this. Don't you just love these colorful birds? TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Ps-Will send you a mail asap as it has been way too long since we sent our last mails. After our failed forumproject, the regular contact disappeared and I think that's a real shame. :(

Hi Gerhart and welcome back!
Nice to see you posting :)

A really beautiful composition you have here with this lovely colored bea-earter!
The POV is excellent, the sharpness impecable and the DOF is really great, having full focus on the animal and leaving such a nice blurry BG.
Very well framed, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Gerhard,
this is a great shot of a beautiful bird. The exposure and details are spot on. Lovely colour and very good POV.
How close where to the subject?
Great work.

Hello my friend.
As always I like everything on this shot, colours, lights, focus, but particulaly good is the composition, with a great pose, and the BG with a gradient which makes the image so elegant. Perfect!
About Cristina, we have been two since I started in TN, she shot half of the photos posted. As she is not very good with english, she preffers to stay in the shadow, but I thought it was not fair I got all the merits, so I included her.
BTW: Did you have notice from Marco about your strange fungi?
I already asked you in your previous post, but I think you did not read the question in the middle of so many votes... it does not surprise me, it is a splendid picture of a Baboon with a great note.
Hope you are well too, MF.
Best regards, Felipe.

Hello Gerhard,
What a marvellous capture! This has all the merits of a good shot, esp. the POV, sharpness and BG. The telephoto effect has enlarged the head in proportion to the body and tail ,but it is very effective!
TFS, regards, Ivan

Hi Gerhart,
I just love the red eye being in contrast with the blue and yellow color. It jsut makes it stand out beautifully. Beside that, the details in the feathers are really great. Excellent composition and DOF. Just a really small pitty that the tip of the tails looks a bit softer then the rest.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Gerhard,

Hi Gerhard,
WOW! That is absolutely perfect. That big gun 500 and the TC do such a wonderful job isolating the bird from the backround. Beautiful soft light. The colors and detail are amazing. Pefect composition and framing. Great camera work! A 10 out of 10 on my score sheet.
