Southern Red Bishop
Euplectes orix

Also know as: Red Bishop, Afrikaans: Rooivink, German: Oryxweber, French: Euplecte ignicolore.

euplectes: Greek ey, well; plektos, plaited or twisted (probably referring to the woven nests of this genus).
orix: the derivation of this specific name is obscure. Latin oryx (Greek orys) is a species of gazelle or antelope. Greek oryx is a pickaxe. Clinning (1989) suggests an origin from Latin orexis, appetite (referring to the bird(s voracious feeding habits). None of these possibilities is convincing.

I know I have posted this bird before but it’s just to beautiful not to post again. Also take note of how fat this male is. He is not puffing himself up at the time. I hope you like it.

They can be found in Africa S of Sahara throughout most of S Africa except central Kalahari basin and NW Namibia.

These birds are very common residents, less common in dry West and nomadic in winter.

They are gregarious at all times. Nonbreeding flocks sometimes number hundreds of birds, causing losses to grain crops. Forages on ground, walking in short steps; also visits feeding trays. Male displays from perch or in beelike cruising flight on rapidly beating wings, plumage puffed out, uttering swizzling song; sometimes several males display simultaneously in different parts of reedbed. Males often chase females and rival males.

They feed on seeds and grain. Insects fed to young.

He is a fat one for sure. The colours are amazing, the background looks extremely dull by comparison. Very well done.

Great portrait Gerhard.
It's so so good, I love it.
I think it's one of the best on TN, I wish it was mine.
Stunning my Friend.
Edxcellent work.

Hy is pragtig !!! die kleure is so mooi..

I love him, looks a bit overweight, but still cuddly ;) if you can call a bird cuddly.

I hate living in the city now.. all i see are doves and ducks!!

Well done

Right in my favorite! No nits, just a pleasure for the eyes. What strikes me the most is the presence of these delicate leaves (any idea of what it is?) and the backlight giving this shot an feeling of delicacy. A painter wouldn't have done better. Congratulations, Gerhard.

He is a chubby wee fella! He obviously knows where to get a good feed. The plumage colours are outstanding. His surroundings are very nice with the small leaves on the branches. I particularly like the wing detail. Very striking with the light coloured edges. Nice one. TFS

I like the border and the handwritten copyright too.

Hallo Gerhard,

Outstanding picture of a splendid bird! Good composition with well handled DOF! And the colors are so vivid! The nicely defocused BG leads the eye to the subject which is razor sharp. Great job! TFS!

Fantastic colors, great composition and sharp details.
