Raptors, but especially owls, are my favourite birds, maybe because they are hard to find but also because of their wonderful eyes. As nocturnal hunters, owl’s eyes are located in the front of the face, just like ours. Those big, intelligent orbs have fascinated men for millennia, & even today, bookish people are often compared with owls. These eyes sure had me transfixed!

African Barred Owlet – Glaucidium capense – 20 – 21 cm – The largest of three owlet species in SA. They are small & hard to find, since they are nocturnal and keep to thornfield habitat along dry riverbeds, where their cryptic colouring makes them nearly impossible to find. This is an adult, showing off the back plumage & its ability to turn its neck more than 180º. There were 2 adults & 3 chicks at Lethaba camp in KNP during December 2003. We could not believe our luck to find, & approach them within range of the 600 mm.

Shot in very dark dusk lighting conditions using Fuji Provia 100F; Nikon F100; Sigma 120-300 F2.8 lens; Sigma 2X converter @ 600 mm; F8, SB28 off camera flash; Aperture Priority; Wimberley head on Manfrotto Tripod; scanned on Epson 2400 Flatbed Scanner; added some area below tail; Reworked this image a bit and got some better contrast with the BG; bit of USM; reduced to Site size.

Fantastic shot Callie,
The full 180 look from the owl is superb,
I agree with you about the fascination of the eyes, they are stunning.
Great details and good clarity
Thanks for posting

A real beauty Callie. I like the way it turns it's head around and gives you a great shot of it's plumage at the same time. The colours are stunning as is the composition. Brilliant work

Great shot Callie.
Amazing eyes. No red eyes from the Big Flash.;-)
Very good pose, composition, sharpness and colours.
Excellent work my friend.

Nicely, Callie. Excelent capture and composition. The image shows the attention in the eyes which you found important. Though it would have been nice to have seen the whole body in focus as well. The eyes makes it up.
Well done.

Superbe prise sauvage, Je vous comprends d'avoir une grande passion pour ces oiseaux très surprenants et mystérieux. Ce n'est pas qu'une photo, c'est une histoire d'aventure. Merci pour le partage et cette note très intéressante.

My first thought was that someone had turned the head wrong but then I remembered that the owls can turn the head 180 degrees.

Wonderful capture Callie. Great sharpness and beautiful colours. - I love the way he is looking at you, great pose.

Great visual impact.
Aptness of the photo for the site: excellent.
Personal assessment of the note: complete.
You did a great work, Callie. This glance is very unique among animals. I am happy to have post another Owl the same day as you.
Good week-end.
Thanks a lot my friend.

Callie, this is a beautiful shot indeed! Great night capture/details/color rendition and useful note. What stuns me the most is to find out that the owl turns his back to us, except its head. Great work! TFS

This looks like the girl of the exorcist! :DD
What a beautiful photo. I still think that analogic images have somethin encharming that digis dont. Maybe is because I am nostalgic. You deserved more than 2 points for this work.TFS.

Callie, Great shot under these very low-light conditions with good use of flash & composed well. Great focus on the head where it counts..Definitely has that wide-eyed "flash shocked" dazzled by the light look there! Well done!!

Lol, I love this one Callie.... perfect expression with his head round like that.

Callie for an owl that's hard to find, you've shown a good one here. Amazing how they turn their heads. Good compo and very sharp. Well done!

Very good shot, very good details and great use of a flash, the colours are great and the clack background adds a lot to the subject.

I'm amazed at how much movement these guys have in their necks. Superb capture, the black BG is excellent and the eyes are like headlights! Well done.

Definitely a good deal more awake and alert than the one shown by Luc - possibly because this one has to find his own dinner ;-))
I would have liked more DOF in order to get his back and tail within range, too, but I've no idea whether this would have been possible in the circumstances.

A very good shot of this owl. Good detail and great looking eyes. I love the full rotation of the head. This makes a great shot. Nice Work!

Stunning capture Callie. You got this one in difficult conditions and you deserve honors for the quality of this shot. The eyes have it all. COngratulations.

Another good owl, Callie. Your wife must love for this, I know how she likes owls. And the eyes! They are so clear and bright, and looking right through you.
Good one.

Draai sy nek om... Om te dink hy doen dit self. :)

I have not seen this one before, Callie. Great shot! Razor sharp where it counts. Just a beauty.

Great illustration of the flexible neck. Generally a nice shot though the tail is bit out of focus. You have used the off-camera flash well and there is no red-refection which is hard to avoid in owls. Well done.

magnetic attraction of his eyes! very nice pose! thanx

The impact of this photo is big because of the light on the subject, the beautiful definition of feathers, magnificent eyes with a brilliant petit point. The contrast is very good and the excellent composition. Great shot!

L'impact de cette photo est grande à cause de la lumière sur le sujet, la belle définition des plumes, des yeux magnifiques avec un petit point lumineux. Le contraste est très bon et la composition excellente. Une excellente photo vraiment.
