Greater Double Collared Sunbird
Nectarinia afra
Afrikaans : Gootrooiborssuikerbekkie

Length: 14cm

Sunbirds are not to be confused with the hummingbirds of North and South America. Sunbirds are mainly an African group with a few species in the Middle East. They are small to very small (10 – 15cm) Tip of beak to tip of tail.

They have a long slender decurved bill and long tubular tongue that enable them to obtain nectar by probing flowers. Many species feed on small insects in the flowers, and a few search actively for spiders.
Their favorite plants are those with tubular flowers such as Aloes, Ericas and Leonotus species.

The males are of most sunbird species very colorful, with iridescent plumages. So too are some females, but the majority are drab and lack luster. Some male sunbirds temporarily lose much of their brilliant plumage in the non-breeding period.

The Double collared sunbird is a high altitude bird found mainly in mountains and highveld.

These fast moving guys really gave me a hard time to capture. They move very quickly and disappear at the slightest movement. This bird was sitting on a sunbird feeder. The activity here was hectic with about 10 sunbirds of various species competing for a place at the feeder. Sometimes WW2 was calm to what was going on here but that made getting good shots very difficult.
This shot was taken from about 4ft (1.2met)

Hope you enjoy this one, as there is a lot more coming of this species in the next few weeks

Yes Willie, we want more pictures from real Africa! I saw that this one you took in Limpopo. In Poland every child in kindergarten learn nursery rhyme about Limpopo. Limpopo sound for me like dreams. Great photo and big thanks for sharing!

Your note learn me that it is not a hummingbird which you have posted today but a Sunbird: interesting.
It is a great capture you have made, Willie.
Thanks a lot and have a good day.

This one looks like she has her fake fur on, wanting to get off to the Ball, and here's you holding her up to take a photo. For such a fast moving bird, this shot looks so good Willie. Well done.
P.S. Were you in WW2?

Very good capture, very good colours.
I think that it is about time that you should 'move' to stills, you have great pictures and very good captures but the quality of the video cam is well seen, for example, there are lot of details that stills can take out from this bird's lovely texture.

Lovely bird Willie, you have captured the beauty of it. Love the colours of her fur, she does look like she is off to the ball just like Janice said. :) Great shot, clear and great detail. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic pose & wonderful colors. Is it a little oof, or is it me?

beautiful head Willie,
I like the composing of the shot with the good, colours and the nice point of view, very good note, very good job

A beautiful portrait that reminds me of hummingbirds, yet, it's not as explained in your note. A "battle royale" would be a good pic as well.
Well done.

Mike

Willie, Very colorful & composed well. Great note pointing out the difference between the sunbird vs hummingbird..Easily confused! TFS!

Great shot Willie.
Your images are so great and beautilful, it's pity that you don't have a "real" camera who shows your eminent skill.
Very good colours, compostion, POV and note.
Great work.

Great pose, colours and BG.
Unfortunately the pic quiality isn't very good.
Well done.
TFS.

I will be waiting for them, Willie.
Maybe the quality of your cam in not the best for TN, but your subjects are most interesting. This days I missed you very much when I am looking at the posts and cannot find yours. This one is a stunning and colourful beautie. At first sight I thought it was a humminbird.

Wilie, it's a great capture. With teh right equipment you would be producing outstanding photos, this could be exceptional but is let down not by your ability but your camera. Very good work.

Great looking bird Willie and charming pose. The colour is wonderful here...well done.

Aaarrgghh... What a moment! I wish I could be there

"10 sunbirds of various species"... aarrggghhh...

What a beauty you captured Willie and so close. Nice one.

Willie, the composition is perfect, and the bird is very beautiful. Vivid colors, nice blurred BG.

Tones, colors are really impressive. I like the design of the photo, it is really strong to emphasize the mood of it.

Willie - good note - I had assumed its a hummingbird, and appreciate the description. Very well captured - even if its not really a hummingbird, like those little fast moving birds I'm sure its really hard to capture, and the one's I've seen done well usually are setups with multiple flashes etc. to freeze the motion. Here you seem to have done it "au naturel" ;-)
