Here is another shot I took in the Thornybush Game Reserve during a Morning Drive. The Hyaenas were just coming out from there den.

Voici une autre photo prise dans la Thonybush Game Reserve lors du Morning Drive. Les hyènes vennaient juste de sortir de leur repaire.

Name: Spotted Hyaena
Crocuta crocuta

Spotted hyaenas are creatures of the open woodland, open savannah, and semi desert. They are predominantly scavengers but are also active and relentless huntres. Their existence depends upon a large supply of game and their disappearance in certain parts reflects the impact of man upon their environment. They are active mainly at dusk and night and occasionally by day.
Their voice is an integral "sound of an African night", a succession of long drawn-out whoops, beginning low on the scale and rising in cadence and up the scale, ending in a low moaning, at the gathering to together for the hunt.
The spotted hyaena family is a matriarchal society, in which the heavier female is the undisputed ruler of the clan. Their main enemies are lion.

Hello Stephane,
Nice capture of this hyena family scene. This is pretty sharp with nice pose. Perhaps a cropping to place the mother and pups a little to the left would have been better.
TFS,
Regards, Ivan

Hello Stephane,
These Hyaenas match their environment perfectly - I love the colours! I also like the way you've captured the profile of the mother to show the long neck. Nice little young one too. Sharp details and a very nice composition.
Many thanks, Ulla

A really good shot. I have seen hyena many times but have never got so close to a mother and cubs. The mother's neck arching over the cubs works very well.

Choosing such a low point of view adds so much drama to this composition. The mother's pose makes her seem so large and protective of her young. I wonder how close you actually were and if you were on the downside of a hill. The soft palette colors and soft light make this special.

Thanks for sharing

Hello Stéph,
This is an excellent capture, nice and sharp with good detail and texture. With a focal length of 280mm you must have been quite close! Good camera work and although I think the contrast is not right it does provide some 'mood' to the image. I posted a workshop with a levels adjustment which has cleared the contrast up, hope you don't mind and like the result. A nice image and a good note, thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Adrian

Great shot. I've seen lots of hyenas over the years.. Nothing close to what you got there !

A rare view of a family of hyenas, Stephane.
I like the composition, with Mother's protective stance over her young.
Good details on these spotted animals.
