Another shot of the young male I took in the Thornybush Game Reserve. He is probably a naughty boy with all these scares... ;-) It was during the afternoon drive and the light was excellente for the photographs.

Name: Lion
Panthera leo

Lions are the largest of the african predators, the males can weight up to 230kg. The females are smaller and lighter (160kg). The hair of the mane can be up to 18-20cm in length and are usually brown, but black-maned animals are also encountered as are extremely rare case of melanisic (black) lions. Rare albinistic animals, comminly known as the "White Lions of Timbavati", occur in ZA.
These, the most sociable of the cats, form prides of 3 to 30 or more individuals, consisting of 1 dominant male, 1 dominant female, several adult males and females, sundry sub-adults and cubs.
Lions are active at night, mainly around sunrise and early morning. In the day they are laze away the hours in the shade, or move sluggishy around.

Food: An extremely wide range of food is consumed. Virtually anything palatable that moves, even insects, mice and up the size scale to buffalo or even elephant - if the lions are lucky. It would seem, however, that the wildebeest is the prime choice.

Hi Stephane

What a stunning shot - beautifully sharp - the texture of the fur and tongue are amazing.

Hi Stephane,
In one word word, marvellous.
Super sharp and as you said excellent conditions.

You could be puzzled about not seeing his eyes; however he's doing his cleaning or so and that makes it not relevant.
Nice compo. Good wildlife image.

Hi Stephane

This is just wonderful. His battle scarred face is in complete contrast to the gentle cleaning action he is doing. Wonderful sharpness, the texture in the fur is amazing.

Très belle photo, gros plan de ce félin.

G'day Stephane
Great detail and clarity here - I'd love to know which lens you used with the D70?
