The Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus) is a resident breeding bird species in much of sub-Saharan Africa, and has been introduced to Haiti.
This very abundant species occurs in a wide range of open habitats, including open woodlands and human habitation, and frequently forms large noisy colonies in towns, villages and hotel grounds.
This weaver builds a large coarsely woven nest made of grass and leaf strips with a downward facing entrance which is suspended from a branch in a tree. 2-3 eggs are laid. This is a colonial breeder, so many nests may hang from one tree.
The Village Weaver is a stocky 15-17cm bird with a strong conical bill. The breeding male has a black head and bill and chestnut nape. The upperparts and wings are yellow and black, and the underparts are yellow.
The non-breeding male has a yellow head with an olive crown, grey upperparts and whitish underparts. The wings remain yellow and black.
The adult female has streaked olive upperparts, yellow and black wings, and pale yellow underparts. Young birds are like the female but browner on the back.
Village Weaver feeds principally on seeds and grain, and can be a crop pest, but it will readily take insects, especially when feeding young, which partially redresses the damage to agriculture.
The calls of this bird include harsh buzzes and chattering.

Nice catch Vivian lovely colours and well composed great POV good details tfs rgds Necip.

Hi Vivian,
Interesting shot; a beautiful bird.
However like you said a bit dark in the background; IMO that doesn't really matter. Though I wonder why this backround is dark; due to a blurred huge tree?
I wonder if your lens was a bit condensed?
Overall well done; especially the compo is great.
TFS

Hi Vivian, great shot, good detail of the feathers. The black BG actually helps the subject stand out. Well done

Wow this looks like a staged photo with that black background Viv!

He stands out well against the BG even his head though obviously harder to make out than the bright yellows of the body. I love your composition and the detail captured. Their nests look incredibly complex and hard work! I imagine this one is quite comfortable with your being around. You're very lucky to see such beautiful, interesting birds.

Next your amazing of pictured scene shot. Excellent composition, vivid colours and perfect details. Your use of spot metering mode is excellent. DOF is shallow a bit, but POV is wonderful. Well done and TFS.

Hi Vivian,
Looks like very difficult exposure, but you managed well here..Cool POV & I like the composition :)
Well done.

Hi Vivin,
I really like this shot with the dark bckround. Yes it does not show the blck plumage on the head so well, but the overall effect is very dramatic. It shows the vibrant yellow plumage very well. A great composition nd pose. Well done.
