Red and Yellow Barbet
 |
|
[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
English: Red and Yellow Barbet
Latin: Trachyphonus erythrocephalus
Dutch: Vuurkopbaardvogel
This photo was placed before. The quality was not so good. I made a bigger crop, with less saturation.
It’s an oldie from 1998. Scanned from a slide.I hope you like it more now.
Identification: A striking yellow and red bird with upperparts, wings and tail black, spotted with round white spots. It gave the impression of a gaudily coloured woodpecker and like a woodpecker it has an undulating flight. The underparts are bright pale yellow, washed with orange on the chest, with a narrow white-spotted black band across the upper breast. The male has a black streak down the centre of the throat.
Voice: A loud 'toogel-de-doogle' repeated over and over, often by several birds in chorus.
Distribution and habitat: Local resident in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and north-east Tanzania. Frequents semi-arid bush country and open thornbush areas, favouring localities where there are termite hills in which it breeds. It is widely distributed and common in many parts of the Northern Frontier Province of Kenya. 23 cm. |

OK, I know the quality is not good, but this is a lovely family of birds, the barbets. My favourite is the crested barbet and I have 2 in my garden at home.
Thanks for sharing as it is nice to see the other family members.
