[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is an old photo of an Augur Buzzard, buteo augur, pale morph female, from my archive. It is a scanned slide. This bird landed just near our truck at the entrance of the NP.

AT PERCH
Appears black from behind and white from the front except for rufous and black forms. Grey- barred secondaries and rufous of tail and (in some individuals) throat evident at closer range. Juvenile appears brown above and buff below. Usually sits rather vertically and appears dumpy with large, rounded head and long primaries extending well past tail.

IN FLIGHT
Characteristic wing shape with very broad secondaries, long, pointed primaries and short tail. Below white with black trailing edge and wing tips, also black 'comma' at wrist. Body and under- wing coverts rufous or black in respective forms. Above, grey bars obvious on secondaries and primary bases. Often on the wing, usually soaring on raised wings with upturned tips and rocking flight, or hanging in the wind with bent wrists, but can flap fast with shallow, stiff wingbeats.

DISTINCTIVE BEHAVIOUR
Spends much time perched in the open, on rocks, mounds, trees or utility poles. Also hunts on the wing for long periods, soaring or kiting, from where it descends slowly on the main small- animal prey of reptiles and rodents. Also capable of fast, rapacious hunting of hares, hyrax and gamebirds. Calls with loud, yelping notes at perch or on the wing. Builds a large stick-nest on a rockface or in a tree.

ADULT
Above black, including head. Below white, including underwing coverts (except for black carpal patch). Flight feathers black above, barred with pale grey, especially on secondaries. Below white with broad, black tips; barring only faintly visible. Tail deep rufous, sometimes with faint, dark grey bars. Fema1e has black throat and/or collar on sides of neck. Form common in Somalia (Archer's Buzzard) rufous below with black streaks on white throat and chest and rufous wash over shoulders. Form common (10-55% of population) in wet forested areas of northern and eastern Africa is black below. Bill black; eyes brown; cere and stout, bare legs and feet yellow. Female about 4% larger (male 880-1 160 g, female 1 097-1 303 g).
JUVENILE
Above brown; feathers have slightly paler tips, producing scalloped effect. Below pale buff with brown streaks on throat and sides of breast. Density of streaking individually variabie from fine pale brown to heavy dark brown. Flight feathers grey-brown, wings barred with darker grey, as in adult, tail rufous-brown with faint, narrow, dark bars and broader subterminal barid. Eye, cere and legs pale yellow.

DISTRIBUTION, HABITAT AND STATUS
Patchy distribution from Ethiopia southwards to Namibia and Zimbabwe. Occupies hilly and mountainous country, from sea level to the highest peaks. Favours areas with rockfaces, wooded slopes, or exotic plantations for roosting and nesting, interspersed with more open grasslands for hunting. Apparently sedentary; commonest buzzard and widespread in eastern Africa, only locally common elsewhere.

SIMILAR SPECIES
In flight, most resembles adult Bateleur (white underwing, black trailing edge and short, rufous tail similar; but body always black; back rufous or cream; face and legs red (adult) or blue-green (juvenile); longer, narrower wings) or longer-winged adult Black- chested Snake-eagle (barred underwing and tail; black head and chest; often hovers). Juvenile paler below and more streaked than other brown buzzards, more like juvenile hawk-eagles which have feathered legs and smaller, more crested heads. Overlaps in Namibia with identically shaped ]ackal Buzzard (mixed black, white and rufous below; black underwing coverts).

Hallo Peter,

Prettig weekend,
John

Dear Peter!

Many thanks for this superb souvenir from Tanzania. I wish I could visit this country... I like your picture very much, especially for the effect created by the bird's pose. It seems to be so proud and confident, sure that it is superior to other animals. The simplicity of your composition gives the viewer a fine overall impression of this marvellous bird.

Kind regards

Markus

very elegantly presented,of this Buzzard, fine low POV
and framing, light and details are very refined

Habilidad al haber podido "cazar" a este magnífico ejemplar que no conocía y que tan elegante y bello se ve. Como en algunas de tus últimas fotos creo que falta algo de nitidez en el conjunto.
