[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This one gave me a real puzzle. Even though i study herpetology, initially i had no idea what species this toad was. The only thing i knew is that it was living freely in Tunisia (this one didn't have the same fate as the chameleon or the horned viper i posted some time ago).

...Initial note discarded...

With Ivan's, Bayram's and Ilias's help, i can now safely tell you that this is a Bufo mauritanicus - the Berber or Mauritanian Toad.
This is a species of toad in the Bufonidae family. It is found in Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia, and possibly Western Sahara. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, rivers, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marches, arable land, pastureland, and plantations. It is threatened by habitat loss.
(I can't believe that the information from Wikipedia is more accurate than the one from AmphibiaWeb).

Hope you'll like it and thanks for visiting.

Salut Horia,

Hello Horia,
After doing a little searching on the internet I found that B. bufo only occurs in the NW of Tunisia. I wonder if this might be a pale version of Bufo mauritanicus.
Whatever, this is an excellent capture, the low lateral POV showing most of its features with fine sharpness and colours.
It is indeed a puzzle that I hope can be solved!

Thanks and kind regards to you my friend,
Ivan

hello Horia
very nice picture with good details and great sharpness
beautiful colours
greeting lou

Salut Horia
Numai bine
Oana

Hello
this is probably a Bufo mauritanicus. I can tell by the ear drum that it is not a Bufo boulengeri.
Very nice pov and dof!
Tfs
Ilias

Hi Horia, well photographed Bufo beauty from Tunisia. But there is not any possibility that this is Bufo bufo since it has a vivid light gray iris. In Bufo bufo iris is absolutely in red. I am pretty sure that your beauty is Bufo mauritanicus which is also found in Tunisia. Although there is very wide variation on colouration, the iris colour, granular ventral skin, of half eye diameter or slightly less tympanum, large and flat paratoids confirm me that this is Bufo mauritanicus. Specimens without patches -as is here- are typical for the Presharan populations of the species.
Thanks for sharing this fellow with us.
Cheers,

Bayram
Ps. after i finished my comment, i saw Ivan's suggestion that he is also agree with my opinion:)))

amazing toad, TFS Ori

Hi Horia. The thing about TN we always have someone to help with the ID . You were able to get down to a low POV with this one. Which lets us see the large dark eye. Good detail taken in the skin. well taken TFS.
Nick..

Have a nice weekend.

Buna Horia,
O imagine excelenta cu detalii precise si culori cu totul deosebite. Detaliile la ochi sunt de mare efect si iti dau senzatia ca te fixeaza cu privirea....
Un weekend placut!
Marius.

Hello Horia,
I liked a lot your shot. The whole frame is absolutely very well done, but I was thinking, thinking and I tried to do a workshop. It is always difficult because when it comes with a so good photographer like you, we thinking twice to do this. I know that your pic have a lot of information and I'd like to contribute to increase these information, just this.
I realy hope you will understand me and I'll say again: I realy liked your shot and thats why I'm doing it.
I wishe you a nice weekend.
Francisco

PS: Of course, maybe you already saw this way and chose to post lighter image, and of course again, It's you post!...and of course again: A great post!

Hello Horia,
This is a beautiful capture of a Bufo mauritanus, with fine details and great focus on the eye. This species is well camouflaged in the sand.

Hi Horia,

How nice that we are neighbors today. A wonderful shot of this beautiful toad. I am certain I will not remember that he is a Berber! The eye is exquisite - seems to be coated with gold. I love the colors and fine details - he is much lighter than the toads we see here. A terrific pose in the natural setting.

Buna Horia.
Grozava captura cu broasca asta care are o culoare superba.
Nu am mai vazut niciodata asa ceva.
Multe saluitari.Alin.

A fine specimen Horia, with nice earthy hues which will make this toad almost disappear in its natural environment. Nice eye contact too...

Dear Horia!
It is really great to see your new picture of amphibian species, especially so interesting and unique. For me it is really great to see this one, I hope to be able to observe it by myself soon in its natural habitat (as my next destination is Tunisia :>).
Fantastic picture with wonderful clarity and soft colours.
