Snow

Snow is precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes. Since it is composed of small rough particles it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure. Snow is commonly formed when water vapour undergoes deposition high in the atmosphere at a temperature of less than 0°C, and then falls to the ground.

I had to wait nearly 40 years to see this wonder called snow. I can still remember looking at your photos with snow in them and wondering how long do I have to wait. Well... the wait is over. I saw, felt and experienced snow for the first time. I am sure I looked like the Bushmen of the Kalahari when they experience rain for the first time. :)

You can imagine that I was like a child. One is not easily impressed as one grows older. I was...

Please permit my photo even though I don’t believe it is 100% TN material. I hope the note makes up for it.

Perhaps the biggest problem you are likely to encounter when photographing in snow and ice, is that of exposure control. I had to read up (afterwards :( ) how to do this. I share my findings with you here:

Remember at all times that your camera’s built-in exposure meter is calibrated to calculate exposures based upon a standard mid-toned or 18 % grey subject. Thus, remember if you let your camera’s meter set your exposure based upon an overall scene of white snow and ice, you are likely to end up with a turgid, unattractive grey photograph. The solution is to “open up” - allow more light to reach the film - by setting the camera’s auto exposure control to the “plus” settings, or by setting the camera to over-expose if you are controlling your exposures manually. Bright, pure white is about two full stops lighter than mid-grey (18% grey) and you should over-expose by 1,5 to 1,7 (i.e. +1,5 to +1,7) when photographing pure white, such as fresh new snow or clean white feathers. It is advisable to slightly underexpose the snow in order to pick up some shadow detail and texture, which is why you should not open up the full two stops. Fresh snow is very white, old snow not so, ice a glistening white all the way through the most incredible hues of blue.

It is an interesting climate when nature prepares for spring and trees blossom, then suddenly snow. The temperature on the preceding weekend was 24-26 degrees Celsius. Strange times!

Anyway… I hope you like it!

Goed gedaan..

Very pretty shot of this snow covered flower Gerhard, all with a very nice exposure.
You think snow is cool wait till you encounter your first snowman, snowangel or even a snowball in the face, you might even hear the phrase"Dont eat yellow snow" and believe me you would'nt want to. I live in the North and get to see this wonderful experience. :)

Very nice Gerhard,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
Good colours, lighting and exposure. DOF is spot on and the POV is good.
Well composed and excellent notes.
Thanks for posting, have a great week. It must be wonderful to experience snow for the first time. Avoid the yellow snow, it's not full of citrus goodness!!!

Hi
Incredible picture.
Excellent color and composition.
Good POV and BG.
TFS!!!!

Eureka... ninguna mejor expresión para definir mi reencuentro con tus maravillosas imágenes.
Una grandiosa composición, suaves tonos, finos rasgos y un foco muy especial, conforman una pequeña obra de arte que pareciera estar pintada a mano.
Cordiales saludos... Ricardo

Eureka... any better expression to define my reencuenter with your wonderful images.
A grandiose composition, soft tones, fine features and a very special focus, they conform a little work of art that it seemed to be painted by hand.

HI Gerhard,

I'm so pleased you have now seen snow! How much did you get? I like the photo, very interesting for someone like me to see snow on flowers (other than snowdrops). Lovely job, well done.

I've given up with points now so I'm sorry I can't leave you any :-))

Wonderful, Gerhard. I really like the dramatic lighting here, and the treat of snow. (Well, a treat for you. I'm sure Canada could work out some kind of exchange if you want more...) You show a remarkable understanding of shooting in snow for someone from so warm a climate!
Mike

Hi Gerhard,
I am very glad you got to experience this part of nature that is very rare in your area. I think you have portrayed it as beautifully as I have ever seen. Superb pastel colors from the perfect exposure. Excellent camera work!

Hi Gerhardt,
Waiting for snow for 40 years... Hmm.. well... :o)) I must say I am really happy for you.
Your shot is awasome, and the flowers look like candy. I like the POV, DOF, framing, colors and the composition a lot. Very well done. TFS

Hallo Gerhard,

Amazing to see the blossom with the snow on top. I still have to see snow. Thanks for this posting.

I would like to congratulate you with your results in the Krugersdorp Salon. The picture that you received a Certificate of Merit for is one that you posted here on Treknature, and I have to say that I liked it immediatly. Excellent results! Very well done indeed!

Hi Gerhard,
CONGRATS, it must be a early Christmas present for you;-) And you saved your money for a trip to Sweden ;-D.
It's strange to see snow pictures from SA when we have a very hot summer up here. Good note about the exposure too, sometimes you have to open up to 2 step or more.
Lovely colours, well composed and good details.
Great work, my friend.

A beautiful delicate snow capped flower enhance by the graduated OOF BG. Magnificent Gerhard. Congratulations. There is nothing quite like snow! :-)

Hey there Gerard!

Wow, snow for the first time in your life! That must be a helluva experience. I have seen snow numerous times in my life, but I still become a little kid when I see snow. :) The photo is beautiful and the exposure is spot on. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Ps-Het gaat goed met mij! Met jou ook zo te horen. :)

Hi Gerhard,

You don't need permission to present this image. It is absolutely NATURE and as a plus it is artistic. I love the gradation and the transition in the BG. Exposure is of course excellent. DOF is shallow but sufficient to render excellent detail in two flowers and texture in the snow.

Not a bad shot for someone inexperimented with snow. If you ever want to practice more with snowy imagery, please consider Canada, where I'm sure you already have plenty of photographer friends.

Great shot and TFS.

Alain

Hi Gerhard, yes, I like it! I was so excited once when it was so cold here I had sleet on the windscreen of the car. To me that was snow!! First and last time, but I still remember it and where I was when driving.
Lovely composition, the snow makes it a winner,
Janice

Gerhard, at least :-) you saw snow again! Congratulations my friend, I can imagine what you feel :-) Picture is very beautifull - fragile, pink flowers and snow. It looks so nice. But you know :-) I hate snow and winter :-))) We've got 40C heat in Poland now and this is what I love :-)

Great to see picture of snow from you!

Gerhard,

An excellent close up shot with OOF BG. The detail, POV, Lighting and composition are all excellent. TFS,

Hi Gerhard,
Unique photo that shows clearly the dramatic climate change you experienced. Another title could be "Frozen in Time"? Because surely this is what you have done here :)
Very well done mf.
