Pink-backed Pelican
(Pelecanus rufescens)

This bird is a member of the pelican family of birds. It is a resident breeder in Africa, southern Arabia and Madagascar in swamps and shallow lakes. The nest is a large heap of sticks, into which 2-3 large white eggs are laid. The chicks feed by plunging their heads deep into the adult’s pouch and taking the partially digested regurgitated fish.

This is a small pelican, but the wingspan is still around 2.4m. It is much smaller and duller than the Great White Pelican. The plumage is grey and white, with a pink back. The top of the bill is yellow and the pouch is usually greyish. Breeding adults have long feather plumes on the head.

Food is usually fish and amphibians and is usually obtained by fishing in groups.

You might have noticed that I took a second and third mortage on the house :) and got the 500mm F4 lens. This lens is amazing. Nearly no sharpening is necessary. This photo required smart sharpening is PS CS2 (50, 0.5, 1). The lens is very large and very heavy. It works very well with the 1.4x converter and still renders sharper photos that with the 100-400mm without the converter. I hope you like it.

Hi Gerhard,
Great capture! I was shooting this exact type of bird yesterday but did not manage what you have done here! Lovely timing and freezing of the action, the image IS sharp. It looks like he's skidding on top of the water.

You got a great lens there, I wish I had one ;)
I look forward to seeing more shots from that heavy lens of yours!
TFS
Mike

Hi Gerhard, I just drop in to say hallo.
It's nice to see a post from you again and now taken with a new toy. A mortgage loan ? ;-))
The details and sharpness are spot on. I like the mirror effect in the wings. Lovely colours and well composed.
Great work, my friend.

Oh dear, what a funny situation you have captured here Gerhard. Is this bird selfpropelled or did you cloe out the wire to the boat;-0).

Excellent sharpness and frozen action, plenty of details and very nice colours.

Mogens

Called in to my local camera shop today and they had a 2nd hand 500 sigma in the window as it was next to a nikon I thought it might be my lucky day, no such luck it was for a cannon ;0((.
the result of your 2nd morgage is stunning in its detail especially in the water splash. I can see some amazing shots coming up. TFS yours Robert

Hi Gerhard,
WOW! An excellent shot. The timing is perfect, and the action is frozen perfectly with the high shutter speed. It looks like some tricky light there, but you handled it extremely well. The colors and detail across the tonal range looks very impressive. A nice one!
Scott

Will have to revisit for the very well deserved :) tomorrow..I have used up my alotment today. Just could not pass this one up.
