Ypthima fasciata, Hewitson, 1865.

This species occurs in Borneo, the Natuna Islands. A sub-species Y. f. torone occurs in Peninsular Malaya and Sumatra. According to Eliot in "The Butterflies of the Malay Peninsula, this species "...is easily recognised by the two straight, dark fasciae crossing the underside of both wings and by the ocelli, including one in Space 4, on the underside of the hindwing which are arranged almost in a straight line." In this picture you can see all these identifying characters, the eye-spot in Space 4 being the very small one, three down from the leading edge of the hind wing.

This appears to tbe the first posting of this species on TN, so I hope you will forgive the issues that arise from scanning an old 35mm slide. After scanning, the image has been cropped and resized, sharpened and de-noised, although the original lighting ad colouring has been retained.

Hello Alan,

You have made a good close-up of this butterfly showing well the pattern and colors of the wings. There is also a fine contrast between the colors of the butterfly and the background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
