[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

Friends, the name Pir Panjal finds frequent mention in my notes on landscape pictures of my native place in the Himalayas I have posted from time to time on TN.
Today I am posting a panoramic view of this mountain range as seen from a high point at Dalhousie – a summer resort set up by the British in the 19th century. I took this picture in December of 1997, using my old Yashica SLR. Apparently, this is a scanned picture.

Here is a brief note on this mountain range:

The Pir Panjal Range lies south of the main Himalaya at an average elevation of 5,000m. From Gulmarg in the North West it follows the southern rim of the Kashmir valley to the Banihal pass. Here the Pir Panjal meets the ridgeline separating the Kashmir valley from the Warvan valley. From Banihal the Pir Panjal sweeps south-east to Kishtwar, where the combined waters of the Warvan and Chandra Rivers meet to form the Chenab River, one of the main tributaries of the Indus.

Passes In Pir Panjal
The main passes over the Pir Panjal include the Pir Panjal pass due west of Srinagar, the Banihal pass which lies at the head of the Jhelum River at the southern end of the Kashmir valley, and the Sythen pass linking Kashmir with Kishtwar. In Himachal Pradesh the main passes are the Sach which links the Ravi and the Chandra valleys, and the Rohtang, which links the Beas and Kullu valleys with the upper Chandra valley and Lahaul. Roads are constructed over all these passes.

The Banihal is now tunnelled and roads have been made over the Sythen pass in Kashmir and the Sach pass in Himachal Pradesh.

As I have already mentioned in the notes with some pictures of this area, I was at Sach Pass the day the road over it was thrown open for public.
A few pictures of this range seen from a different perspective can be viewed here and also here.

Hello Ram,
This is a fine panorama of a part of the Himalayas. This is sharp and has good lighting and has deteriorated too much from the scanning.
I'm now too old to see this in reality so I'll be content with shots such as this.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Sir,
The mountains with snow. Still a dream for me- a Maharashtrian. No snow here. But can get close to it with tis kind of pictures. Nice and beautiful pic. Scanned images have their own flavor. They almost look lke paintings. Fading blue color does the magic here with nice DOF.Thanks a lot for sharing

Hello Ram,
Considering the age of this photo it is still pretty good. It is a beautiful range of mountains you show here and you must have been pretty high up when taking the picture. Nice colours and the brown foreground makes a fine contrast. I'm surprised about the "power lines"(?) at this height!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Ricardo

Wonderful landscape from that imposing height Ram.
The beauty of the region is enhanced by the excellent point of view and the elected framing for its LP presentation, with great brightness and integral focus, besides appropriate PP for its digital processed.
The problem is that the extended version doesn't appear neither with the Internet Explorer 7 neither Firefox... is there some inconvenience with the publication of the same one?
Best regards... Ricardo
