May 1995.
A pleasant and sunny late spring morning at a place called Haloga in the mountains of district Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, India.
Altitude: 8000 ft.
We planted our first apple trees here way back in the spring of 1962 forty-four years ago. I was a school boy then. My father was a Forest Officer, a nature enthusiast to the core. In 1965 after retiring from government service, he built himself a log hut in the middle of the plantation and lived there like Thoreau – the famous American Transcendentalist. He was a private man, happy with nature as his constant companion. Lived like that till he passed away in 1996.
I used to visit him once or twice a year, mostly alone without my family. It was a tough walk of nearly six hours from the road head.
I visited him in May of 1995 and stayed overnight, drinking his home brewed apple cider and chatting with him the whole evening.
Next morning, before leaving, I took a few pictures of the mountains across the valley. These were the mountains I had seen from my childhood, almost mechanically. They held no special fascination for me, but still I took their pictures, just indifferently.

Time has passed; nostalgic memories have started returning with a vengeance. I have not been to this place for years now. The plantation was old, so it died with my father. The log hut is gone, razed to the ground by the elements, I am told.

I had taken this picture standing in the window of that hut years ago. Not a good picture, I know. The snow covered mountains in the distance are called the Pir Panjal range – a tall barrier between two valleys in the district. On the other side lies the tribal valley of Pangi.

It is a scan, so forgive me for the poor quality.

Hi Ram,
Thank's so much for this wonderful view on indian mountains and your so human note. It reminds me so much of my grandfather, who lived in a very similar landscape and was a very wise man too. I understand your nostalgia well..

Hi Ram,
You don't have to feel sorry for this scan! You shows us a very nice view here. When you hear the story behind it I can imagine that this view is worth of value for you. The picture is not bad at all. Ver nice composition with incoming lines and the whole gives a perfect registration of the overwhelming mountain area. Well done, Ram.

Hello Ram,
Thank you for showing us this fantastic landscape from your childhood and describing your memories so well. It is a stunning view over the valley and mountains, wonderful colours and it is taken from a very nice viewpoint. It's so beautifully green compared to Ladakh. I'm amazed that you can grow apples at this height.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Ram

What a wonderful experience is this thing called 'nostalgia'. Sometimes overwhelmingly sad, sometimes a little melancholic, but mostly it brings warm, affectionate, and pleasant memories of a time, a place, or a person that was so dear to us. Sometimes maybe we did not even realise or appreciate it at that stage. It seems the older we get the more we are visited by this random phenomenon. More and more we realise that we miss our parents (who have maybe already passed on) or friends (whom we haven’t seen or thought of in years and don’t know where in the world they might be).

Many different things may trigger this kind of an event. A smell, a sound, a picture (as in your example), a place, etc., or sometimes it’s simply an idle or lonely moment when you did not consciously think about any of this stuff. Then your brain suddenly surprise you with a flash, a recollection, a moment of intense connection with the past, or whatever memories it might conjure. I just love these moments for many times it recalls that which you did not care to think about or for many years probably you did not even know that you could still remember it.

Thanks to your interesting and revealing notes you did not only disclose your approximate age, but you also reminded us of these wonderful human characteristics of feelings, love, sentiment, and emotions.

Your scanned photo is by far not as ‘bad’ as you imply. The lovely green foreground shows interesting contours & colours, and provides a degree of scale to the photo. The rolling layers of blue mountains in the BG show much of your very beautiful country. Although the sky has a little bit of noise in it, maybe it also represents a little bit of our past which might be somewhat tainted with the ‘noise’ of our imperfect relationships.

Good work my friend and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Ram.
What a lyrical, sad a bit, heart and touching story. I am fascinated by it.
This picture is very a good memory of the last times, dear parents, the youth. This picture gives some representation about that fine edge where you lived.

Your shot is excellent. Amazing combination of green cover and blue tones of wonderful mountains. We can see a lot of beautiful details everywhere in the shot. Lovely story and lovely done picture.
With sincere respect,
Alexei.

Ricardo

Very beautiful landscape Ram with wonderful point of view of 3 areas very well defined.
The intense colors and illumination, added to the appropriate framing conform a remarkable presentation, in spite of the scan so much time after of the capture.
My best wishes... Ricardo

Hi Ram,
Heart felt history that touch me! Confusing blending of emotions as -by its own essence- they are. Time inexorably runs with the beating of our hearts and we as beings gifted with self consciousness have to live with this sometime hard burden.
BTW the picture is really lovely. Green slope in the forehead, blue mountains as background, snow, sky,... the best image for your note.
TFS, José M.
PS. Be indulgent with my english!

Hola Ram,
El paisaje es único y de gran belleza, la luz muy bien equilibrada y los colores son magníficos. Un cordial saludo

Hi Ram,
WOW! WOW! WOW! that is some breathtaking scenery. The rich green foreground scenery is beautiful next to the bluish sky from the high elevation. Such a greatsense of depth. Amazing!

Hi Ram

What a stunning sigth! Wow! The view from up here is impressive adn i really like the way that vivid green looks again the clear blue of the far mountains and the sky.
The composition is lovely with all these nice diagonal lines of the slopes exiting the frame, the POV is excellent and the atmosphere given by the massive adn impressive peaks is gorgeous.
Very well done, my friend!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Ram,
Thank you for sharing this so nice and touching story with us. This is beautiful and it makes us realize that time past by so fast sometimes and bring with him people that we loved. This is a beautiful place and I think that you were very lucky to have the chance to visit it for a while. This must have been quite an experience. I don't think that the quality of this picture is bad, not at all. This is beautiful scenery with very nice contrast between these great blue and green colors. This is a very nice presentation. Thanks,
Claudine

Salut Ram
