Hi Friends,

I know the picture is not the best but taken in the worst light condition near a waterfall. This is the most ugliest caterpillar i'd ever seen. This was captured in my trip to Navja waterfall. There were 5 to 6 caterpillar spread on the plant. It was looking like a bird dropping. I dont have the ID but think that it might be a swallow tail caterpillar.
Length: 2inches

Thanks to laurens sir for the correct ID of this ugly caterpillar.

The Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) is a swallowtail butterfly common in various parts of North America and marginally into South America (Colombia only). In the United States and Canada it is mainly found in the south and east. With a wingspan of about 10–16 cm (3.9–6.3 in), it is the largest butterfly in Canada and the United States.

The mature caterpillar resembles bird droppings to deter predators, and if that doesn't work they use their red osmeterium. These are 'horns' which they can display and then retract. The coloration is dingy brown and or olive with white patches and small patches of purple. Citrus fruit farmers often call the caterpillars orange dogs or orange puppies because of the devastation they can cause on their crops.

Thanks & regards,

Hello Kapil,
Indeed it looks uglie. The colors and details are very good presented. This color is a very good camouflage for this interesting caterpillar.
Thanks for sharing!

Bonjour Kapil,
Une chenille en tenue de camouflage, image pas très courante.
