Slender Skimmer or Green Marsh Hawk (Orthetrum sabina)

This was the friendliest dragonfly I ever photographed. I had almost finished my day’s shooting when I noticed it at the fringe of the forest. It actually circled me, as if to draw my attention. When I took out my camera, it settled down on a stick, ready to be photographed. I literally nudged it from time to time to change its position and it readily complied. Even when I was finished, it gave me company until the forest ended and the city began.

Slender Skimmer is a common and very widespread dragonfly found all over Asia and parts of Australia, the Middle East and Northern Africa.
The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does) we are left with a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution these are almost certainly the most often seen of the dragonflies.
The genus Libellula is mostly New World, but also boasts one of the few endangered odonates from Japan -Libellula angelina. Many of the members of this genus are brightly colored or have banded wings. The related genus Plathemis includes the whitetails. The genus Celithemis contains several brightly marked species in the southern United States. Members of the genus Sympetrum are called darters (or meadowhawks in North America), and are found throughout most of the world. Several Southern Hemisphere species in the genera Trithemis and Zenithoptera are especially beautiful. Other common genera include Tramea and Pantala.

Hello Ram,

Nice composed and capture, excellent colors, Bg, POV DOF Excellent work,

TFS kyle

Hi Ram,
I believe that your dragonfly is from the same species with mine, posted sometimes ago. So, this type is widely spread in Asia.
Nicely composed picture. Deeper DoF may make this image even better. I am using the same camera and I find it is not easy to make a very sharp close up or macro shot using this camera. How about you?

Hello Ram,

Even if the bg is "busy", I like this image mainly because you took an unusual pov... Nice composition and nice natural colors! Good picture and TFS,
