Another shot of Daphnis Nerii from my archive. This shot is a good example of camouflage. This shot is dedicated to Peter (Batu) who has great knowledge about these insects.

Family Description: The Sphingidae belong to the Superfamily Sphingoidea. Members of this family are commonly called "hummingbird," "sphinx," or "hawk" moths, and some can be mistaken for hummingbirds. Most are medium to large moths, with heavy bodies; wingspread reaches 5 inches or more in some species. The Sphingidae are strong and fast fliers, with a rapid wingbeat.

Most species in the group are active at dusk, and most feed much like hummingbirds, hovering in front of a flower and sipping nectar through the extended proboscis. The proboscis rolls up when not in use. Some species lack scales on large portions of their wings, resulting in transparent or clear wings. In most species, the larval stage is called a "hornworm" because the caterpillar's posterior end has a harmless hook or hornlike appendage protruding upward. Unfortunately, the caterpillar of some species can be very destructive to agricultural crops and ornamental plantings.

There are about 1,200 described species in the family It is best represented in the tropics but there are species in every region (Scoble, 1995). They are moderate to large in size. Among the Lepidoptera, they are distinguished for their rapid, sustained flying ability (Scoble, 1995). The narrow wings and streamlined abdomen are clearly adaptations for rapid flight.

Some hawk moths, like the hummingbird hawk moth, hover in midair while they feed on nectar from flowers and are sometimes mistaken for hummingbirds. This hovering capability has evolved only three times in nectar feeders: in hummingbirds, certain bats, and these sphingids (Kitching, 2002). Sphingids have been much studied for their flying ability, and especially their ability to move rapidly from side to side while hovering, called 'swing-hovering.' It is thought that this talent evolved to deal with ambush predators that lie in wait in flowers .

Hi Pankaj,
An excellent example of butterfly disguise technique! You've mastered colours and contrasts flawlessly and presented it in a very appealing composition and framing! It looks like a very solid and heavy piece of butterfly for swift takeoff, so it apparently feels sufficently safe with this camouflage :-). TFS and best regards,

Hi Pankaj,

Great picture of this moth.
Great color, sharpness, background and lighting.

Hello, Pankaj
I think this moth is really incredible, it makes one wonder where the military came up with camouflage fatigues. Very nice perspective with great lighting that reveals very nicec colors and sharp details. :)

Hello Pankaj,

This is a great dedication and a very good example of camouflage! I like the composition with the tilted central nervure. Actually all the textures and colors look great! Exposure is very good and preserved the details in both highlights and shadows. Maybe some small areas are slightly OE but it isn't distracting. It could as well be my monitor. The informations presented in the note are very interesting! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,
