The Red-vented Bulbul, Pycnonotus cafer, is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to Myanmar and southwestern China, and has been introduced to Fiji and Hawaii. It is also common in urban parts of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

This is a bird of scrub, open forest, plains and cultivated lands. It builds its nest in a bush; two or three eggs is a typical clutch.

Red-vented Bulbul is about 20cm in length, with a long tail. It has brown or black upperparts, with a white rump. The breast is brown or black, and the rest of the underparts are white apart from the red around the vent. The head and small crest are black.

Sexes are similar in plumage, but young birds are duller than adults. The flight is bouncing and woodpecker-like.

There are a number of regional variations in plumage, mainly with respect to the upperpart and breast colour. Red-vented Bulbuls feed on fruit, nectar and insects.

The Red-vented Bulbul is incapable of synthesizing vitamin C. It shares this features with a very limited number of other animals, among which are certain fruit bats and primates (including humans) as well as the guinea pig.

bonjour pankaj
un leger manque de piqué sur l'oiseau mais cela passe presque inaperçu grace a la beauté des couleurs du BG.

Terrific colors - - - the dark bird against the lively flowers - very pretty. Lovely detail in the feathers.

Hi Pankaj,

This is one of my favorite birds and I thank you for this lovely portrait. The black plummage is fantastic with the touch of red. Wonderful details and a beautiful background.

Superlative contrasting of various shades which blend together as in a Sherwin Williams Paint Ad. It is an awakening shot that sticks right out!

Bob of the Wilderness

A difficult shot to expose properly between the dark bird and the brilliant colours all around it. A bit of work with bringing up the darks with curves might make the bird pop out a bit more. TFS!

Hi pankaj,
good shot,good composition

TFS,with greeting Milos.

Very fine presentation, Pankaj.
The image is shot from a very good perspective, utilizing the bougainvillea for a very appropriate colourful BG.
Well done and TFS.

I was in Goa 9 years ago; did my best to get a "glimpse" of this species in the wild ..... NO LUCK.
I'd pay almost any price to "possess" this creature. It is a SUPERB nightingale.
You have captured ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL details of your subject.
Great composition; presented with a lot of taste. Notes were done with meticulas care.

Casi a contraluz pero conseguiste plasmar bien este ave que yo desconocía. Me gusta sobre todo el conjunto y esa buganbílea es muy adecuada como fondo, porque da contraste y viveza a la fotografía. Saludos Pankaj.

This is amazing to see in which great environment birds and insects live in India Pankaj. It is always so colorful and flourished. This is an excellent capture of this beautiful bird with great details, beautiful composition and exposure. This dark color must be a challenge to calibrate and you did great! Thanks,
