This is the picture of Common Palmfly, Elymnias hypermenstra. This is the most common and widely distributed Palmfly and the only one found in South India .It is very common in jungles and palm plantations . It avoids bright sunlight and rarely comes out into the open . Itis active through out the year in South India and from spring to autumn in North India .It has a weak flight and settles for a long time on leaves or trunks of palm trees at some height from the ground . This species shows strong sexual dimorphism .The female is seen very rarely and on the wing , mimics the plain Tiger , Danaus chrysippus and the Common Tiger , Danaus genutia genutia . Though usually they lay eggs in coconut palms, in our place the larvae are most seen in ornamental palms in the garden. The larvae are bright apple green in colour . Head square ,pink with a pair of yellow horns . Body with ashy yellow dorsal and sub-dorsal lines and blue and red spots on segments 8 and 9. Last segment with a pair of tails, yellow at the base with pink spots .It feeds on Bamboo , Coconut , Arecanut , Date and other palms.

The mating pair was seen sitting on Malasian Bamboo planted in our garden. It was drizzling and I could take only few hurried shots. The photo was taken with D200/AF S Nikkor 300mm, handheld. The image converted from RAW to JPEG.The light was not very good so I have made some ajustments in photoshop cs and also cropped the image.
Thanks a lot for stopping by and leaving your critiques.

HI Smitha, I am really jealous man. Not an opportunity i get to see the butterfly in delhi. I think due to hot weather most of them are dead or sleeping. This is really beautiful. Ganesh
