Dear All,
This picture is dedicated to Mr. Ram Thakur whose pictures and critiques have always been an inspiration to me.. For past few days he was after me for not posting any pictures in TN. (Reminds me of those good old college days when our teachers used to be constantly after us to stop loitering and come out with our best essays ) I have been thinking of posting a picture for quite sometime now, but never ended up actually doing one because I was feeling very lazy. Moreover, after a long while I was spending as much time as I could muster in TN going through all your beautiful pictures and writing my comments on it. Hhhhmmm I just love it. You people are amazing- what a lot of beautiful pictures are you posting!!!
Well, at last I decided to come out of my stupor, Thank you, Ram Sir, and here is the result.
This is a picture of a Cattle Egret from my archives. I was trying to capture some in-flight shots of Terns when I suddenly noticed this Egret which has wandered nearer to me in search of those aquatic forms on which they feed. It was midmorning and the light was bit harsh but still I think I have gotten away with a decent picture.;)

Some information on Cattle Egret:
Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis can be distinguished from Little egret by colour of the bill which is yellow, not black. During breeding season it acquires an orange buff on head, neck and back.(You can see the orange buff on its head in the picture.)
They are mostly seen with grazing cattle, running in and out between their legs and lunging out to seize insects disturbed by their movements amongst the grass. They eat chiefly insects like grasshoppers, frogs, lizards, fish etc. They roost at night in favourite trees sharing it with mynahs, crows and other birds.

The picture was taken with Nikon D200/ Nikkor 300mm AFS F4, at ISO 400, hand held.

Hi Smitha,
I feel proud to be the first to critique your photo, not that there is anything to say other than it is a wonderful shot. Nice to see your posting after such a long time. Immaculate sharpness and perfect exposure of the white plumage, which is difficult at times in bright natural light. Very skillfully handled. I like its pose looking out for food on that muddy pond. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.

Hi Smitha,

I'm glad Ram convinced you it was time for another post! A wonderful Egret to dedicate to him. I love the pose - wonder how he gets the leg in that position. The whites are superb and the yellow eye and beak are beautiful. Keep posting!

hello smitha,

very nice capture dediacted to a very nice human being, the affection towards Mr. Thakur is so common among all of us and its all beacuse of the way he responds to our images and the encouragement. He has a lot of personal touch is his approach and thats whay we always feel connected to him and love him. My learning of photography has been always inspired by him.

Regarding your shot i liked the spoton focus, the composition and good management of exposure, the simple framing lloks effective here,

well done,
tfs & regards

bonjour smitha

Hi Smitha,
Good picture! and we all share Ram's concern when you dont post :-) The clarity in this picture is very good.

Hello Smitha,

Nicely pose from the bird and exellent pov.
It is a wonderful shot.

This is a really nice one Smitha, love that motion captured as it wades through the waters and slightly parted beak ready to snap on anything that he feels can be his prey.I have always been fascinated by that "yellow buttoney" eyes these birds have.YOu have tamed the harsh lighting pretty well.
TFS & Cheers

I am deeply touched and humbled by your kind gesture of dedicating this beautiful picture of a Cattle Egret to me, Smitha.
You are one of the most original and gifted nature photographers on TN and I mean it. You are fortunate in being able to lead a peaceful life amid nature's plenty in a state like Kerala. You see flora and fauna in their most pristine and natural habitat and when you take their pictures and share them here on TN, people from all over the world get to know the diversity and the beauty of nature in Kerla.
On the other hand, when I try to find wild life in a manicured garden in an urban concrete jungle like Delhi, I am banking on the hope that some stray butterfly, dragonfly or any other creature might be on a short visit to this garden in which eco-systems cannot exist. Every day, this place is tended, cleaned and manicured by scores of gardners.
Eco-systems exist where nature is allowed to be on its own -- the real wilderness.
So I am sort of frustrated with the fact of being tied down to a job 24x7 in a metropolis. Mercifully, I will have a month of holidays in June and I intend to go to a place where there is real wilderness and I am at liberty to spend my time taking pictures at my own pace. Sometimes I wonder almost cynically if real wilderness actually exists in this age of economic boom!
Sorry to bore you with this tirade. Keep shooting your beautiful pictures; all of us look forward to them with anticipated pleasure. Pictures like this one of an Egret wading through slush -- its natural habitat.
It is a beautiful picture and thanks for sharing it.

Hello Smitha,
