I have to admit that I am not a bird photographer and also my gear does not allow me to. But the desire in me to catch these wonderful animals keeps on burning and I try my luck off and on. Today I present this beautiful Kingfisher with a catch. For the last few days I see much activity from this fellow and more or less it always has a different catch. I am worried I would be left with no subjects if this fellow remains active for some more time. Anyway....almost a full frame shot, I have only cropped a bit of the wall from below. Hope everyone like this shot.

The White-throated Kingfisher, Halcyon smyrnensis, also known as the White-breasted Kingfisher or Smyrna Kingfisher, is a tree kingfisher which is widely distributed in south Asia from Turkey east to the Philippines. This kingfisher is essentially resident over much of its range, apart from seasonal movements.

This is a large kingfisher, 28 cm in length. The adult has a bright blue back, wings and tail. Its head, shoulders, flanks and lower belly are chestnut, and the throat and breast are white.

There are four races differing mainly in plumage shades, but H. s. gularis of the Philippines has only the neck and throat white. The flight of the White-throated Kingfisher is rapid and direct, the short rounded wings whirring. The large bill and legs are bright red.

In flight, large white patches are visible on the blue and black wings. Sexes are similar, but juveniles are a duller version of the adult. The call of this noisy kingfisher is a chuckling chake-ake-ake-ake-ake.

White-throated Kingfisher is a common species of a variety of habitats with some trees, and its range is expanding. It perches conspicuously on wires or other exposed perches within its territory, and is a frequent sight in south Asia. This species mainly hunts large insects, rodents, snakes, fish and frogs. It is reputed to eat tired migratory passerine birds like Chiffchaffs where the opportunity arises.

White-throated Kingfisher has a striking display in which the wings are spread to show the white patches. The nest is a 50cm tunnel in an earth bank. A single clutch of 4-7 round white eggs is typical.

Hi Sumon,
Beautiful capture and great results with compact camera.Vivid colors, clear details,BG,POV,moment you caught and composition are perfect.Very well done!
Thanks for posting.

Hi Mana,
another great shot of this bird. Is it always the same?

Hi Sumon,

It's really a fantastic photo. & love the absolute dark background. But even if you are not a bird photographer, I would not accept that your gear does not allow that. It allows much you only have to wait and watch. It's a handy 400 mm lens. You have to part with a fortune to find an equivalent prime lens from nikon or canon fitting their dslr. You only have to you use it a little carefully allowing for full or half frame shot, since cropping on compacts are not very ideal. Then you can use the histogram feature. I suppose that was required here. Due to the entirely dark background the dynamic range of the ccd shrinks abd it looks a little overtly color saturated.

Anyway keep shooting & keep sharing.

Hi Sumon Da,
What a lovely capture of this beautiful kingfisher and also the skink I suppose. Superb details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Sumon,
Well, well, this is not too bad either! I'd be very proud indeed to get a close-up like this of this beautiful Kingfisher. Great focus, excellent sharpness and beautiful colours and I like its pose with the Lizard in its beak and the dark background is perfect. Quite brilliant!!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hi Summon

Great catch. You were very lucky to get this close. Its my favourite kingfisher species, I spent a lot of time watching a pair in Thailand but couldn't get close enough for a decent shot. This one is good, complete with skink. Good pose and sharpness.

Sumon, I too shot this Kingfisher with a catch but hesitated to post it because the shot was not very sharp since it was taken in a hurry and from quite a distance with my 70-300mm. Maybe I will muster courage one day to post it, no matter how bad it is. Obviously, since I shot this beautiful bird for the first time recently, I sat up when I saw your thumbnail in the gallery.
Though we do have OE patches in the frame, they do not rob the picture of its essential qualities. It is a fantastic image and well worthy of praise.
Thanks and all the best.

Hi Sumon,
Although You said You aren't a bird photographer, this capture is awesome. Fantastic colors, details, sharpness and empty, yet very effective background. Superb photo of the halcyon, cannot be any better. Bravo.
Best regards from Hungary, László

Not sounding ungracious but this reminds me of my Ipod skin...now having said that small bit of nonsensical trivia...it is a fine image..The clashing colours are a very interesting combination...One has to wonder once more at colour and the way you see it...Of course when clashing, usually it is noticed right off...I sure saw it...but the blues define some borders well and it was good of you to expand on that in the frame!

hello mana,
Looks very voracious your fellow. But it will still remain enough to catch with your lens ;-). Excellent bird picture, I must say that you are very lucky to have this one just under the hand.
Kind hello from Switzerland

Hi Sumon!

Yes, I like it, it shows the bird in a real activity and reflects the way things happen in nature. I also appreciate the richness of details, but I regret a little bit the somehow unnatural aspect of the picture due to the totally black background. From my point of view, a blurred background helps to highlight a subject like this one, but the uniformity and the colour of the one in your picture reminds me a bit too much the biological or zoological book. But these considerations do not change anything to the fact it is a very valuable picture, well accompanied by interesting and instructive notes.

Kind regards

Hi Sumon,
Splendid shot of our city (Smyrna=Izmir) Kingfisher and its poor prey (I think it is a triton as I seen) with excellent details. Great moment and great captured. TFS.

Hi Sumon, great capture of wonderful bird with fine details and splendid sharpness, fantastic colors and beautiful presentation, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Sumon,
Smyrna or Izmir third biggest city in Turkiye. As you mentioned, it ranges from izmir to Philippines. It was also described firstly from izmir. Unfortunately, it not seen in there recently, probably extinct. but it lives still in southern coast of Anatolia. Ten days ago, I searched this species in Adana province and I saw firstly living members of this species in there. Around ten individuals. they are very beautiful birds as like other kingfishers.
Well, your capture perfect with focus, composition and timing in its feeding time. none of my captures good as yours as. You are lucky. As I seen, it also captured a salamander (Urodelan amphibians). interesting observation for me. thanks for sharing this beauty. best wishes

Hello Sumon,

A lovely situation has been captured with great details!
The expression of the proud bird is well conveyed, seems like he eats whatever moves, hehehe...
A fine composition with vivid colours!

Hello Sumon, this is a very good catch of this Kingfisher, with his catch. Shot at 72mm, you must have been very close to this guy. The colours and sharp detail are very good, with very nice positioning of this bird in the frame. Keep this desire of yours to shoot birds occasionally burning.

Thanks, John

nice pic, no need for the frame though, TFS Ori

Hello Suman!this is a prized catch by you.Its clarity, sharpness &above all the timing is wonderful.Hope to see more such shots from your lens.

Dear Sumon
Your Kingfisher has certainly caught a good meal, and you got a good shot, and I add your work to my theme "Animals feeding, part two".

All your photos are technically impeccable and the colours well controlled. This image, however would be in my opinion even more attractive, if the frame was less heavy and in a lighter colour. The frame you chose is overwhelming this delicate bird instead of enhancing it.

Thanks for sharing,
Take care
Warm greetings
