If ever I did feel so lonely and felt that time has stopped then these were these last few days. Hope everyone still remember me and like my posts as they have since I joined TN. I have missed you all very much too and wish to see everyone back here as before, with the same kind of zeal, camaraderie and love. Though the sadness remains of what happened to many of my dear friends but I sincerely feel that the dark days will be over sooner than later and a new day will dawn soon. Just like this day, in the year 1947, when we as Indians saw a new day begin and felt as if we were reborn.

Today I present this beautiful and stunning butterfly to mark this glorious occasion when we as Indians feel proud to be such - The Common Silverline, Spindasis vulcanus. It is a species of lycaenid or blue butterfly found in Asia.

A small 'blue' with a wingspan of 20-30 mm. The sexes are similar. The upper sides of the wings of both sexes are dark gray brown to slate. On the upper side of the hind wing of the male there is no shot blue, though some specimens do have a trace of it. On the under side hind wing, the central band is more separated from the outer band than in any other species, making the yellow area much wider and a distinctive feature.

It is found all over Asia and is the commonest Spindasis. Its numbers peak during the south-west and north-east monsoons. It inhabits scrub land with sparse vegetation, hedge rows and secondary forest.

A butterfly that is truly difficult to disturb when nectaring on flowers - it is so oblivious to the outside world that it may even be caught with ones bare hands. But like all members of the Spindasis, it takes off explosively when it leaves its perch and is difficult to follow in flight. It loves to feed on the ubiquitous Eupatorium odoratum and is a commonly seen on them. Another favorite source of nectar is Vernonia zeylanica.

Shot taken hand-held in cloudy and wet conditions.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Lycaenidae
Genus: Spindasis
Species: S. vulcanus

Hi dear Sumon,
It's excellent to see you back!
It's a same high-quality posting from you again. Crisp sharp, well exposed and composed. Shallow DOF and POV are very good.
I still need some more "proof of life" from other banned friends and also (as I still expect) a step forward from the owners and the moderators. Otherwise I am still on a break...
All the best,

Hi Sumon and a very warm welcome back!

It's great to have you back here and resuming your activity and it's also great to see your spirit is high :)
This is a lovely macro especially thinking about the equipment it was taken with - the Canon kit lens is not the easiest thing to shoot close-ups with, but you managed it very well.
Even if you extra blurred the BG to make the subject stand out better, this is still a nice shot and a good presentation.
Lovely colors and spot-on exposure, too.

Bravo and TFS

It's nice to see you back.

It is nice to see a butterfly to symbolize the rebirth of your country and the metamorphosis of a land bound creature to one that symbolizes beauty and freedom.

Hi Sumon

Welcome back from the dark wilderness, Like teh others I'm happy to see you return. This is a great species, one I'd like to see for myself in the wild one day. Those silver streaks amaze me, a most unusual colour in nature I think. Great DOF for only f6.3! Excellent sharpness and composition.

Hi Sumon
A very nice and colorful Lycaenidae to celebrate India Independence day. I´m glad for your return to TN.
Image is really good, with a nice close-up, likeable composition, with butterfly over a flower, with a appropiate blurred and uniform BG.

Hi Sumon,
A Very Very Happy Independence Day to you too.

Hello Sumon
Lycaenids are my favourite butterflies, and this genus is specially beautiful, but I had never seen it so beautiful as you present it here. It's really delightful to see this picture. The composition is great, much more with such excellent sharpness, splendid DOF, and natural light and colors.
Really marvellous.
Independence Day is indeed a happy day to be happy, and I am happy you feel so.
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.
