This mud-puddling small and beutiful butterfly I encountered inside Satkosia WLS (about 180 kms. from Bhubaneswar). This is the first time I post this species. It was a cloudy and rainy day and the light was very poor inside the deep jungle. As we drove along the muddy road I saw these small ones in clusters - there were atleast 4 varieties mud-puddling. Shot taken hand-held while on my belly. Hope everyone like it.

------------------------
The Angled Pierrot (Caleta caleta)is a species of blue butterfly found in South Asia.

The butterfly flies rapidly, close to the ground visiting low flying bushes. Found along nullahs and shady paths. It visits damp patches too. Found in jungle and lightly forested country with moderate to heavy precipitation.

Male upperside is dark brownish black, a broad medial oblique white band across both fore and hind wings, not extended on the fore wing above vein 5, above vein 3 produced shortly outwards and downwards into a hook-like form. Underside: white with the following black markings:—On fore wing a short, outwardly-pointed, oblique, clavate streak from base joined below to a semi-circular broad band that reaches the costa; a short, outwardly oblique, upper diseal bar, its outer edge generally emurginate; the apex, the terraen narrowly, a large irregular sub-quadrate spot touching it in the middle and a very large inwardly oblique irregular spot or mark close to the tornus. On the hind wing: a hook-shaped mark at base sometimes slender; an inwardly oblique short clavate bar from apex, three coalescent spots extended outwards from the dorsum above the tornus formed into a sinuate irregular mark; a spot further outwards in interspace 4; a terminal series of slender lunules and an anticilary fine line. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen black; beneath: the palpi, thorax and abdomen white.

Female- Similar to the male on both upper and under sides, but on the former the white medial band is narrower, on the latter the black markings are broader. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen as in the male.

The butterfly is found in Sri Lanka, peninsular India, Madhya Pradesh, south Bihar, Orissa, and in the Himalayas from Sikkim to Assam and onto Myanmar. The butterfly is also found in southern Sulawesi, Basilan, and Mindanao. Common in Sikkim up to 300m though it has been recorded up to 2800m in southern parts. It is abundant in the monsoons. Not Rare over the Indian range.

hi sumon,
very good, neat and valuable image of angled pierrot, bit rare to see them here. tfs.

Your belly must be well-attuned to the antics of nature photography by now, Sumon :-)!
This shot of an Angled Pierrot (a new species for me too) justifies the unbecoming usage of your belly.
The perspective that you acquired by doing so is the most effective in terms of clarity, details and overall composition.
Thanks for sharing a fine picture of this rare species and best regards.

Hi my friend Sumon,
A perfectly focused and composed butterfly shot as usual. Great details and wonderful colours.

Ciao Sumon,
splendida cattura di Angled Pierrot, eccellenti POV basso e composizione con la posa sui granellini di sabbia brillanti che esaltano la nitidezza e i bellissimi colori delle ali.
TFS. Maurizio

I think maybe your notion of mud is not the same as mine...but then maybe the mud isn't in this image...because this looks to me like coarse wet sand...the reason I say this is because during spring melt-down in the wilderness....our mud can suck in a car above it's axles if not a good driver:-)
A fine backdrop no matter for you butterfly. The sumon technique returns...We are Blessed!

Beautiful butterfly. I love the exposure and nice natural colors and the sharp focus.

Wow! What a black-and-white-and beauty butterfly! :)
I like pose - contrast between insect and sand is very nice for watching.
Thank you for showing us this interesting species :)
Best regards from Lodz my Friend!

Hi Sumon,
This is a good picture of this beautiful butterfly, the colors and the composition is good. If you look at the ground you can clearly see the DOF and what surprises me is that few mm before the butterfly is sharp!
