This is one of the smallest butterfly I have seen and captured on camera. It is a very swift flier and prefers low grounds, hence it was hell of a time catching this on camera. I spent the entire morning running after this, crouching, bending, creeping, crawling....everything I could possibly do to get a proper shot. Finally I managed this one, though not the best still I love it, all the more sweet because of the trouble I had to endure. Unfortunately I cannot ID it now......please someone help!!! The least I can do is to know what species it is.

This was taken inside the Simlipal Tiger Reserve, near the Gurandia beat house, where I was putting up during the Tiger Census.

This indeed is the Common Threering, Ypthima asterope. The absence of the eyespot on the under hind wing tricked me. The dry season form often has the eyespot absent in these ring species'.

Scientific classification -
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Genus: Ypthima
Species: Y. asterope

Hello Sumon,
this is most probably Ypthima asterope (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae). However, there are similar
species which may lack hindwing spots in particular in the dry season, such as Y. huebneri od Y. indecora.
Y. asterope belongs to the smallest species of the genus.
Thank you for the nice and sharp picture of the specimen within its also beautiful natural environment.
Best wishes, Peter
