Hello Friends,

This is a shot of a hoverfly enjoying the nectar and basking in the sun.

Here are few details of this species. Hope it's useful.

Flies in the family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or syrphid flies.

As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects.

Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year; because of this, aphid-feeding hoverflies are being recognized as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for use in biological control. Some adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.

About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described. Hoverflies are common throughout the world and can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Hoverflies are harmless to most other animals despite their mimicry of the black and yellow stripes of wasps, which serves to ward off predators.

nice picture. But to be frank, i think thepicture can be little more sharp. That is one important point as far as macro shots are concerned. The best teacher you can get to teach you is our friend Fartash. Ask him to share you some tips. :0

It must be thinking it need cataract surgery:-) It has pollen on its eye..and in a way I think that alone brings the special focus to the image Pearl...Very cool and unique image!

Hello Pearl,
Though a little soft, this macro of a male species of Hoverfly clearly shows most of its features taken from a fine frontal POV and set in a pleasing composition on the yellow flower. You can tell it's a male because the eyes are closely set together while those of a female are separated (She has more brains:)).

Hi Pearl,
nicely composed fly, with the flower complementing it.
The glow inside the flower is so lovely and the use of light is exciting too.
