Hello friends,

This is a shot of a mantis enjoying it's meal. I like shooting moments where the subject is active, one can learn about their behaviour through such experiences.

Description: Praying Mantises are exclusively predatory and their diet usually consists of living insects; larger species have been known to prey on small lizards, frogs, birds, snakes, and even rodents. Most species are known to engage in cannibalism. The majority of mantises are ambush predators, waiting for prey to stray too near. The mantis then lashes out at remarkable speed. Some ground and bark species, however, pursue their prey rather quickly. Prey items are caught and held securely with grasping, spiked forelegs ("raptorial legs"); the first thoracic segment, the prothorax, is commonly elongated and flexibly articulated, allowing for greater range of movement of the front limbs while the remainder of the body remains more or less immobile. The articulation of the head is also remarkably flexible, permitting nearly 300 degrees of movement in some species, allowing for a great range of vision (their compound eyes have a large binocular field of vision) without having to move the remainder of the body. As their hunting relies heavily on vision, they are primarily diurnal, but many species will fly at night.

Nice peep through the yellow flowers to show us this little Praying mantis having a meal.

Sounds like teh pit bull of the insect world! Seriously well painted creature. ours iss not quite a beautiful...more of a single colour. A unique image....very much different!

I have seen Praying Mantis only very rarely, but I am always impressed by these insects. And this one is even more beautiful, with these colors. You have captured her very nicely, with good details, natural colors, in a great composition, I like to see all these yellow flowers around her. Very well done !
