I have clicked this in my Jammu and Kashmir trip in May 2010. This is a common bird near the mountain ranges of Himalaya.

Himalayan Bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogenys) is a rare resident, found in Morni Hills and Kalesar forests of Haryana. This is comonly seen in the gardens of Srinagar, (Capital of Jammu and Kashmir). Thats where I have captured it during my last trip to Jammu and Kashmir.

The bird is recognized by its black head, white cheeks and yellow patch under tail. It is locally called Kushandra or Bhooroo. The bird grows up to 18 cm in length. Its upperparts are dull grey, with darker flight feathers and black-brown tail whose feathers show terminal white spots. Eyes are red-brown, narrow yellow eye-ring.

The bird feeds primarily on insects, fruit and berries. Seeds, buds and nectar are also consumed.

There are other 2 types of Bulbuls which are commonly found in the area where I live. These are - Red Vented Bulbul and the Red whiskered Bulbul . Both of these are really Red vented where as this northern bird is yellow vented.

Hi Kedar,
a superb picture regarding composition and colours. Perhaps you cold have increased the contrast?

This is a Crested Himalayan Bulbul, Kedar, not just a Himalayan Bulbul.
I have seen both red vented and yellow vented Crested Himalayan Bulbuls, even though I've captured just this variety.
This is an excellent shot, I love the frame and the perfectly saturated colours!
Very well done!

Hello Kedar,
Very fine and colorful shot of the Himalayan Bulbul. I like your decentred presentation showing the green fence on which is posed the bird. Striking apparition this bird with its funny hairstyle. And most beautiful background, probably the wall of some house.
Well sees and presented
have a nice weekend
Kind regards
Anne
