The caterpillar of Common Rose (Atrophaneura (Pachliopta) aristolochiae) is a beautiful velvety maroon colour and has a beautiful white band on a segment on its middle reminiscent of a belt or collar. It has numerous fleshy red-tipped white protuberances on the body. It is bulky and slow in its movements. It is a beautiful caterpillar.

Foodplants

The larvae feed on creepers and climbers of the genus Aristolochia, Family Aristolochiaceae and they sequester toxins such as aristolochic acid in their bodies. This makes the adults toxic to vertebrate predators such as birds and reptiles. However the Braconid wasps which parasitise the caterpillars have apparently co-evolved with the butterfly and are not affected by the toxins. Larval foodplants include:

* Aristolochia bracteolata
* Aristolochia indica
* Aristolochia tagala
* Aristolochiae griffithi
* Thottea siliquosa

Hi Hara,what a spectacular caterpillar,impressive design and colors,and your perfect pic is the best way to discover this beauty of your country.Very well done,have a nice Sunday,LUCIANO

Very clear and unobstructed view of the Caterlillar of a spectacular butterfly, HP.
Fill flash has done justice in highlighting its features and colours. The green surroundings add a natural touch to the picture. The white band has gone a wee bit OE, thanks to the need for using fill flash under the circumstances.

Dear Haraprasan
what astonishing animal. Where is the front ? i.e. did the animal advance to the left of the picture or the right?

Does it feed during the day?

I am also interested into the flowers of the plants on which this caterpillar feeds i.e. do the explain the colouring of the animal?!?

Thank you so much for showing this interesting animal on TrekNature!

Thank you also for visiting so often my portfolio.

I wish you a good week my friend,
Greetings from South Africa, Tzaneen
