Friends, I was very fortunate to come across this magnificent large dragonfly in my native district Chamba of Himachal Pradesh during my recent trek to a high pass in the Himalayas. The moment I saw this huge and elegant creature, the word “Emperor” came automatically to mind. My slow and tedious research finally led me to its true identity in the Asian context though this genus is mainly found in Europe. The note below is a menagerie of information culled from different sources:

Fantastic photo Ram!! The POV, the composition and the sharpness are excellent. The colours are fantastic. We have this species also in Cyprus. It is a local species but I have seen it a lot of times. Unfortunately I have not a good photo yet.

Magnificent is the word Ram, both of the subject and the way you captured it!
The use of flash is normally not to be encouraged when photographing dragonflies because it causes undesirable reflections on the wings, but at this angle there is no problem. Instead the colours look natural and the sharpness and DOF superb against a fine neutral greyish BG.
A real beauty and a joy to view!
Thanks and all the best,

Hello Mr. Ram!
A beautiful picture with an unusual POV for a dragonfly, but the result is very good. The background is complicated, but well resolved. Good job!

Hello Ram,
What a beauty! Your trek to your homeland was very lucky. This is what we say in French "Un cadeau du ciel" (gift from heaven). What a wonderful creature. I just can feel your reaction when you saw this heavenly dragonfly, I remember of course your former encounters..
Excellent shot too, what a beautiful color-combination. Bravo!
Kind regards

Hello Ram,

A superb macro recording, showing the finer details in the insect so well!
The composition is pleasing to my eyes, with good lines a a shallow DoF that isolates the subject nicely...
Good clarity in colours too!
