Birds of Santiniketan:
Cotton Pygmy Goose or Cotton Teal is found all over India and also at Santiniketan. I was found this lovely water bird at Lalbandh, Santiniketan which is near to my house. As I mentioned earlier that Lalbandh is very rich with its flora and fauna. One can found so many birds and insects in this area. Cotton Teals are very shy and don't come to the nearer to side of the lake.
I like to capture the various moods of the birds, so, this one is one of them.
Open wing is a female and behind is a male.
Thank you for viewing and comment.

Common Name: Cotton Teal or Cotton Pygmy Goose
Scientific Name: Nettapus coromandelianus
Local Name: Girri, Girja
Description: The Cotton Pygmy Goose or the Cotton Teal Nettapus coromandelianus is a small perching duck which breeds in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, southeast Asia and south to northern Australia and also found all over India and is a resident bird in most part of the country. It flocks on jheels, ponds, wetlands including paddy fields, irrigation tanks etc
Identification: Small examples are the smallest waterfowl on earth, at as little as 160 g (5.5 oz) and 26 cm (10.5 in). White predominates in this bird's plumage. Bill short, deep at base, and goose-like.
Male in breeding plumage is glossy blackish green crown, with white head, neck, and underparts; a prominent black collar and white wing-bar. Rounded head and short legs. In flight, the wings are green with a white band, making the male conspicuous even amongst the huge flying flocks of the Lesser Whistling Duck, which share the habitat. Female paler, without either black collar and only a narrow or nonexistent strip of white wing-bar. In non-breeding plumage (eclipse) male resembles female except for his white wing-bar. Flocks on water bodies (jheels), etc.
Size: 26 to 33 cm.
Bill: Short bill with deep at the base. More like a Goose.
Flight: Swift flight on wings and also dives occasionally.
Feeding: Mainly vegetable matters but also insects, crustaceans etc.
Nest: The nesting season is July to September (SW. monsoon). Its nest is a natural hollow in a tree-trunk standing in or near water, sometimes lined with grass, rubbish and feathers. It lays 6 to 12 eggs, which are ivory white. A natural hollow in a tree trunk near water. Lined with grass, rubbish, feathers etc.
Call: Clucking call while in flight.
