Small Tortoiseshell
 |
|
[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I shot this butterfly in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, on June 9 this year. It was perched on a little heap of garbage with its wings open.
The small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is a colourful Eurasian butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Adults feed on nectar and may hibernate over winter; in warmer climates they may have two broods in a season. While the dorsal surface of the wings is vividly marked, the ventral surface is drab, providing camouflage. Eggs are laid on the common nettle, on which the larvae feed.

Hello Ram,
Beautiful photo of this butterfly. Good sharpness and nice natural colors.
Regards,
Peter
Dear Ram,
well composed, well approached capture of this cute and very agile butterfly of the mountains.
Regarding the identification: instead of the similar looking but more brightly colored common and wide spread Aglais urticae, I might suggest to consider the Himalayan species "Aglais caschmirensis (Kollar, 1848)".

Thank you! With best whishes and greetings from the Alps to the Himalayas !
