Bharatpur was very dry this year as a result there were very few birds. However, coming from the US, even common waders were a sight for sore eyes :) I liked the composition of these 3 guys .. I actually had them all looking the same way, but was not quick enough to get a shot.

Positioning of the birds in the frame is not optimal - would have preferred more space on the right and that the bird in focus is not smack dab in the centre - but, as I said, I did not have much time, the bird on the right was actively pursuing interests that took it out of my frame.

Here are some details on the bird:

The Red-wattled Lapwing (Vanellus indicus) is a lapwing, a group of largish waders in the family Charadriidae.

It breeds from Iraq eastwards across tropical Asia. Some northern breeders are migratory, but other populations are resident apart from seasonal dispersion.

These are conspicuous and unmistakable birds. They are large waders, the size of Northern Lapwing with black crown, chest, foreneck stripe and tail tip. The upper face, the rest of the neck, flanks, belly and tail are white and the wings and back are light brown. The bill and facial wattles are red, and the long legs are yellow.

This species is declining in its western range, but is abundant in much tropical Asia, being seen at almost any wetland habitat in its range. Its striking appearance is supplemented by its noisy nature, with a loud and scolding did-he-do-it call.

Hi Liezel,
Nice capture of this group of lapwings!
I like so much the same level POV to show this good details on the birds.
It's so good and interesting the two tones beak, and how the red colour continues until the eyes.
Excellent DOF to get this soft and OOF background.
I think that you did a very good composition with this 3 birds.
Congratulations and thanks for share.

Nice capture! Nice composition, details and colours.

Hi Liezel, these are a very strange looking bird. I have a couple of Plover shots in my collection but I haven't seen these guys yet. Reading your note, I can see why. You've got a great shot, capturing the 3 at once. Your focus is good and you've chosen a great depth of field to isolate that background. Great colour and detail.

Thanks, John

Hello Liezel,
Very clever to capture three of these Lapwings in one shot! I think they are so beautiful with their long yellow legs and red masks. Sharp details and lovely colours in this brilliant composition.
Many thanks, Ulla

Great shot - it os good that one of them is facing the other way becuase it allows us to see more of the birds plumage and details. The composition is very good with a great DOF and exposure and they contrast beautifully with the dried mud they are standing on.

Hello Liezel,
As you imply in your note, this shot is not perfect, but it's not far off! The composition and BG are great and the POv shows slightly different views of the two individuals on the left.
This is one of the best shots of the Red-wattled Plover that I have seen.
Well done and TFS!
Regards, Ivan
