Epiphyllum sp.

Ranging in size from 1 to 12 inches (2 to 30 centimeters) across, the blooms of the 'orchid cactus' come in brilliant reds, creamy whites, deep oranges, bold yellows, and tantalizing pinks and purples. Most of them are hybrids, patiently grown and cultivated by avid epiphyllum enthusiasts, but the true species native to Central and South America and Mexico are no less stunning.

Although they are found in tropical jungles, epiphyllums are indeed cactus species that make a living by growing in the forks of trees and in rock crevices, feeding on vegetative matter and capturing moisture from the humid air and frequent rain showers. But as their name suggests, they are epiphytic, living along with a host plant without harming it, as opposed to parasitic plants that invade their hosts.

Genus Epiphyllum has 19 species [so I will not speculate on which species this one is].

Hi Ben

It is a great shot of this cacti and your notes very craftily explains how this is an epiphyte and not a parasite. Many people don’t realise the difference and the moment they see any epiphytes growing on another plant then they tend to think it must be a parasite of sorts. I see this so many times with orchids.

You’ve captured this flower so well to show off its natural beauty. There is a radiant glow emanating from the brilliant colours and the stunning detail shows all the intricate facets of this beautiful flower. The OOF and dark BG compliments the bloom and the exposure was just swell.

Great work and TFS.
