[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This butterfly likes the dark parts of the rain forest and usually flies in the understorey close to the ground.

Its name:
- Faunis menado
- family: Nymphalidae
- subfamily: Amathusiinae

Note: Formerly as family Amathusiidae and recently classified as tribe Amathusiini of the subfamily Satyrinae.

It is often found together with species of the Satyrinae genus Lohora which look very similar.
Faunis menado like all species of the genus Lohora are endemic for the Sulawesi region in Indonesia.

Usually, I do not use a flash but was necessary due to light conditions within the dense forest at late afternoon.

Interior of rain rainforest.
About 20 km east of Kolaka, Sulawesi-Tenggara, Indonesia.

Hi Peter,

excellent quality image with good camera skills shown here, you have managed the elements superbly,

The use of flash (as in this case) for the less experienced photographers, can greatly improve lighting to the final image, using equipment to your best advantage can lead to great pictures, well done Peter,

Best Regards,

Hello Peter,
A magnificent shot of this beautiful deep woods butterfly. The flash really made the colors come alive and you obtained exceptional detail. Perfectly exposed and displayed in an attractive composition.

Hello Peter,
Beautiful butterfly. Even in tough situation you have captured it very well using flash. Very nice sharp picture with natural color. I like its natural habitat.
Thanks for sharing your work with us with informative NOTE,

Very impressive use of fill flash, Peter.
Superb focus on the battered but beautiful butterfly that gives the impression of similarity with the under-wings of a Peacock Pansy.
