Species: Papilio polytes
Subspecies: alcindor
Family: Papilionidae
Wing span: 9 cm

Papilio polytes is widely distributed in South and South-East Asia: from India and Sri Lanka throughout continental South East Asia to Indonesia and northwards in Tibet, east China, Taiwan an some smaller sothern Japanese islands.
About 17 subspecies were described. The subspecies of Sulawesi shown here is named ssp. alcindor and is of particular size. It is a usual feature of Sulawesian butterflies that repsective subspecies are larger than those of other areas.

Location: North of Kolaka on the west coast of
Sulawesi Tenggara (South East Sulawesi). Secondary forest at the base of hills which constitute the southern foothills of the Tamosi Mountains.

The picture shown here was taken under very difficult conditions:
-- insufficient light at dawn
-- ISO 800
-- hand held (1/40 sec)
-- position of butterfly above me with no chance to support hands or elbows.
-- slight plant movement

Hello Peter,
Considering the circumstances and the low light that you had when you took this shot, the result is very good. Black subjects are difficult under better circumstances anyway.
The slight over-exposed wingtips are therefore acceptable.
TFS a shot of a species new to me.
best wishes, Ivan

Hi Peter,
a bravo from me for managing this capture. The result is superb, considering the circumstances you describe. What's more, subjects like this, containing both black and white, are very hard. You usually end up overexposing the whites or underexposing the blacks. I think your exposure here was just right.

Hello Peter,
Considering the awkward circumstances I think this is a beautiful shot. It's a very sharp illustration of this species against a contrasting background. (Did you shoot this on Sulawesi?? An island I've always dreamed of visiting!)
TFS, Ulla

Hallo Peter,
Sehr eleganter Schmetterling, dieser dunkle Papilio polytes, mit den weissen Bordüren. Schöne Aufnahme ; die leichte Unschärfe der Unterflügel wirkt überhaupt nicht störend.
Liebe Grüsse

Well done Peter,
The b-flies wings are exposed well with good detail.
Good job considering the conditions you stated.
Happy Holidays!

Hi Peter.
You have captured a very nice specimen and its image balanced with BG excellently. I like your POV, blurriness of the BG and nice lighting. My compliments and TFS.
