Changeable Lizard (Calotes versicolor)
[Thanks to Ivan Kruys for helping me with ID of this lizard]

This tree lizard can change their colors, quite rapidly, but not as rapidly as chameleons. Changeable lizards are usually a dull brown, grey or olive with speckles or bands, but can can be seen in other colors such as bright green. These color changes may reflect their moods.

During the breeding season, the male's head and shoulders turns bright orange to crimson and his throat black. Males also turn red-headed after a successful battle with rivals. Thus their other gruesome name of "bloodsucker lizard". But they don't actually suck anybody's blood! Both males and females have a crest from the head to nearly the tail, hence their other common name "crested tree lizard".

Changeable lizards are related to iguanas. Unlike other lizards, they do not drop their tails (autotomy), and their tails can be very long, stiff and pointy. Like other reptiles, they shed their skins. Like chameleons, changeable lizards can move each of their eyes in different directions.

Changeable lizards eat mainly insects and small vertebrates, including rodents and other lizards. Although they have teeth, these are designed for gripping prey and not tearing it up. So prey is swallowed whole, after it is stunned by shaking it about. Sometimes, young inexperienced changeable lizards may choke on prey which are too large. They are commonly found among the undergrowth in open habitats including highly urban areas.

Hello Benyamin,
Very interesting the composition of your photo, with the lizard comming in by the right, instead down.
The head's details are very clear and well focused.
The background works pretty well, so soft.

Hello Ben,
I don't think this is a Chameleon.
This is a fine portrait of one of the many agamid lizards that occur in SE Asia and Australia.
You could probably get an ID using the internet.
Sharp with fine lighting, comp and BG.
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

The Saga Continues! This is the 6th part of a story that still has a few parts to go! A story about a storm building on Lake Erie. December 1st, 4PM can be seen here ( If you go back in my gallery you will find five previous photos building up to this and more information on Lake Erie)I was going to make a collage of photos but felt they told a better story seeing them full size. Lake Erie is where I live . In this photo I am looking SouthEast, the direction the wind was coming from. The state across that 58 miles of Lake would be Pennsylvania USA.
At this point when I checked the marine forecast ( I find since we live on the Lake its much more acurate to read the Marine forecasts) Anyhow they had now upgraded our Gale to a Storm. When I first heard the word "Storm Warning" I didn't think much of it.. Back in Vermont that just meant you were going to get a bunch of snow, or lots of rain. Well here on the Lakes its as close to a hurricane as you can get without actually being one. The winds were they were expecting we were going to get would be 50KNOTS with higher gusts. (50 Knots is about 60MPH this is what can happen...(Whole gale trees uprooted; considerable structural damage occurs a hurricane is actually anything over 73 MPH...) AT this point I did walk over to the otherside of the road that is in front of my house , the water was now splashing at the banks which normally we have about 15' of beach inbetween the bank and the water. I was really glad at this point that we also have a 10' bank ..never would I complain about having to climb down the stairs to the water again! I was also happy that the wind was southwest and was going to turn west before approaching that storm and we have alot of protection from wind in that direction for our house...whew..if it had been south...oh my..the waves on the lake at this point dont' look that high from this photo because I live in a shallow part, you can actually walk 100' feet out and not get past your waist..the waves on the lake were now 12'....

Thanks for your comments on "December Storm - 6"

Hi Ben,
this looks great, very well composed with a excellent crop and great colors. The neutral BG does sho off your subject very well and the sharp details pop out very nice. Excellent DOF which works very well with the light/shadow situation.

Hi Ben

What an interesting compositin with this cute lizard. i ratherlike it! :)
The pOV here is...i would say unique, but that is, i think, what makes this such a special post :)
Also the DOF is great, giving you a splendid, almost monochrome BG. Nice details and textues of those scales and very good management of the exposure.

Hi Benyamin,
Great Head Shot of this cool looking lizard.
I like your colors,blurred bg,frame,note,his pose/expression,focus and sharpness.TFS
Chris

Hello Benyamin, this is a nicely composed shot, the pose is excellent as is the lizard looking back at you. I think perhaps there is a little bit of a yellow colour cast. I've done a WS to try and correct.
